nope but you have to take precautions...to cover yourself, not just the buyer.

just put a claim in and tell them what its worth they might pay out, my last parcel that got broken with fedex was insured up to £50 and i got a £63 payout.

It is up to you- the seller, to make sure the customer receives what they paid for. If they paid 50 for something you should insure it for 50. That way whatever happens you are not left out of pocket.
Has the courier definately lost the parcel? If so what courier was it- will avoid them!

How long has it been since you sent it? We are comin gup to Christmas, there are a lot of parcels out there, maybe it'll turn up in a few days.

You can post special delivery at the post office. I sent 3 furreal animals the other day and it only cost 8.65 insured up to £500. They weighed over 1kg.
I also found a dhl courier site on ebay when i sold a tent weighing 30kg and they only charged me £7.99.
Might be wise to shop around next time! I always use the price finder at Royal mail website before i do anything!

As for hermes kick up a fuss. Keep emailing and ringing until you get the desired result. I can only hope your buyer isn't mean and leaves you neg.

it was sent last Friday on 3-5 day delivery, the other 3 items i sent that day were all received Wednesday. I've tracked the parcel through my account and its says "parcel collected" then "request for collection from somewhere" then stops all the others carry on the "recieved on van" etc

Then it's only been 5 working days... give it another week at least, before you go refunding anyone. Might be nice to let them know you will refund them once you've had your refund from the courier though, otherwise your customer will start getting arsey with you...

if they start a claim through paypal don't paypal automatically take the money from you until the dispute is close?

I don't know - but if you are nice to the customer, they won't start a claim will they? Just explain it was insured, and when you've had your payout, which you won't get until the courier is sure it's been lost, you'll pass it on to them. No need to tell them you underinsured it, just keep them in the frame, and they;ll understand. Plus, they can find another one (whatever it was) elsewhere if they know they're not getting it.

If they start a dispute then it is just communication between you and the buyer at that point.
If they escalate the dispute to a paypal claim then paypal put a temporary hold on the money until the claim has been resolved.
make sure you have enough money to cover that in your paypal account - you dont want that to go into negative funds- that is no picnic i can tell you!
Good luck with it all.
