forgot to say refund is for £159.99, so because it is over £150 i have to send it back at my own expense recorded signed for, can paypal make me send it back to the head office even though that is NOT the address i won it/ picked it up from

I would argue that it should be sent back to where it came from, not to head office etc

I wouldnt send my big mac back to head office if it was burnt / cold

Same sort of principle

You have to be able to prove you have returned it by an online trackable method, so even if you could return it to the place 20 miles away, you would still have to send it by some sort of postal method I'm afraid.

Looks like they are trying to make it more difficult for you but don't know what you can do about it i would just pay the return postage and be done with it.

i would send a letter recoded delivery to the head office explaing that you are returning item where you got it from and submit that referance number to paypal

If I were you, I would do exactly as Paypal tell you to.

you need proof of postage for paypal to find in your favour and make the refund so would be the same price wherever you send it lots of cheap couriers mentioned on here

Agree with most of the comments, remember recorded won't cover you for the amount you need, use a courier probably the best bet.

You paid with paypal and picked up, could've scammed then in the first place!

Not saying you would, just suprised that they let you pick up after paying paypal, usually that's a big no-no!

should of just told paypal you never received it ;-)

If its a business it sounds like you can reject the faulty goods under The SOGA, as being unfit for purpose, you are not obliged to return item, simply make it available for collection.
I would raise an objection to this with paypal as being in contravention of your rights under said act, see what they say, if you really wanted to push it, a letter to companies HO (recorded delivery) and keep a copy simply stating your rejection and requesting a refund.
Keep copies of all documentation in case you need it for court.
