    Economical car ideas

Now that I have got a new job i am going to be travelling 40-50 miles a day and therefore need something more economical than what I have now, so naturally im looking at a diesel.

I have a few cars in mind one of them being a Volkswagen Golf tdi which does around 45-50 mpg, well my girlfriends fathers does that.

I have around £9500 to spend and would like something with a bit of poke as well as being economical!

What cars do you have in mind

    thanks in advance.

problem you have is poke and economy dont really mix

I had a Jetta 1.9 TDi S 105 - wasnt exactly quick, but would give 50+ mpg if driven appropriately

I now have a Mondeo ST TDCi 155 - driven quietly you can get around 42-43 mpg. Use the loud pedal more often you drop down under 40 - but its worth it! Great to drive, great spec and easily under 10 grand

Absolutely rock solid! Don't think of the Kia of old - they have def stepped up a gear. i have a 2.0 Diesel but the Pro Ceed in black. Excellent car all round!

anyone got the new shape ford focus tdci?

If so what do you make of it?

im leaning towards the focus now, but it has to have an armrest! Im thinking of the 1.8 model as that will have a little bit more poke than the 1.6.

Go for the Golf far nicer car

the thing is with the golf, they hold their value pretty well, I would like a golf tdi, and for the money i want to spend they have high miles and pretty drab interiors. The focus has a good interior and very low miles for around £9000, the average mileage i have seen on the cars is around 15000 which is not bad.

I need to find out what people think of the focus tdci if anyone has one.

You can actually get a brand new Kia Ceed 1.4 S for £8995 OTR. with a 7 year warranty, why would you buy a Ford with high miles on for more?

That price is not subject to the scrappage scheme either.

im still not won over by the kia cee'd and the mpg is not as good as the focus.
the sort of miles i would be looking at on a focus is around the 15000 mark

Have you looked at Seat or Skoda at all? Due to the Skoda brand being less desirable they're cheaper than the equivalents Golfs however they use all the same VAG parts and have actually been outperforming both VW and Audi for build quality and reliability. I had a Skoda Octavia GLXi with the 90 bhp diesel engine and now a Seat Toledo Sport 150 with the 150bhp version of the 1.9 engine, when gunning the Toledo it will drink more than the Octavia did but on cruising thanks to a tall gear it can still manage more than 60mpg. Only 120 quid for the tax is nice.

BMW diesels are currently exceptional thanks to many clever tricks but unfortunately they're expensive.

Fair enough, if you would prefer a second hand Ford, with 15000 miles on the clock and little warranty...fine.

15000 miles on the clock is nothing though plus the cars i have been looking at have around 2 years of warranty left. Why has the cee'd got 7 years warranty?

Not sure why, but they all have it, obviously Kia have confidence in their cars.

I don't own a Kia Ceed, but I did have one out on a 3 day test drive and I was highly impressed with it.

If I was in the market for a new car, it would be at the top of my list.

most cars come with a 3 year warranty dont they?

Most new cars do yes, but Kia Ceed is 7 years and all Hyundai's have a 5 year warranty. ( Hyundai is the same company as Kia ).

im just looking for one that i like now, i want alloys, air con and an armrest. i just think they look silly without an armrest!

Kia Ceed have the cam chain diesel engine as highly recommended in the motoring section of the telegraph.
