Seens the government condones closing our schools down on a whim. If education is so important, why do they do it? Just to get new members in on the expenses Jolly isn't a convincing reason.

    WHY?

Hey - Gordon - leave those kids alone.........

its one day and its only primary schools.

Its Child Protection, if a school is used then there will be hundreds of people wandering about the school and its very difficult to keep them away from the kids, more polling station are being moved into other buildings near us to minimise school disruption.

There have got to be loads of buildings all over the country that could be used instead, I assume its laziness of councils not wanting to be bothered finding different premises.

I think it would be better if they used Town Halls and Community Centres.

dunno how it makes me pro expenses. i think primary schools are good as they are good locations with big halls/enough rooms. so fair enough. ur not disrupting secondary schools and primary schools can afford a day missed especially during the summer

Thats right, but schools can opt out, not sure if they get money for it though.

Its up to governors to tell council they are not going to allow use of building next year, most areas have churches, community centres, council offices near by and they could all be used instead, I would guess that most pubs could be used too, and would possibly be happy not to be paid as they should see an increase in custom.

Or supermarkets, most of them must have an area they could use.

i think they do but there arent loads of them around; whereas there are more schools

Our local primary school was used, then it was closed down and the town hall has been used ever since - why could it not be used in the first place???

I agree that schools shouldnt be closed for polling, the school doesnt allow you to take your kids out of school for a day. Causes problems of childcare as well

Strange isn't it we use our local Village hall for voting and not the School and I have been living in the area for 35 years and it's always been that way.I suppose as we live in a Democratic country we should put up with the inconvienience sometimes to have an elected representation

Its down to the councils to get more imaginative, there are loads of buildings available, even health centres could be used, libraries, etc but is much easier to stick with the same building they used for last fifty years.

shut the schools for a day and the kids can go on shop lifting trips and buy some cheap booze and sit in the sun .. Ideal......

mmmm sounds like an MP`s job:w00t:

ONLY! When both parents work ( and especially so close to a half term
break AND a Monday inset day! ) It's VERY inconvenient.....

School used to be shut here but they moved it to a community centre now,I preferred it when they off but can see how it can inconvience those who parents both work.

Ah i wasn't sure thanks magicbeans. I cant see them making a special building just for voting. The only other idea i thought of was if they used churches.

I have lost £220 today as I have to look after my little one, so we can vote for a useless buch of toss pots. I hope nobody uses there vote to show how dissalusioned we are with all the parties

So the message is EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION for secondary schools only?

I do. Some cant. So as Dog Cop says, why give the kids a day off to go shop lifting?

well secondary schools are the ones with exams at the mo...primary schools (i assume as i have a son in year one) aren t working to a super strict timetable.... there is a lot more room for catching up. like i said i have a kid in year one..... if i had a kid in year 6 maybe id have a different view point....but really whats a kid in infants gonna miss out on?!?!

the rubbish about them shoplifting....bit sterotypical.... and to be fair if a child is gonna take a day off so are his parents...so unless they team up...i cant see it being at its peak on those days

too right, is why i'm voting BNP, supporting brits init

    +1

Also, it is so hard to take a child out of school for a holiday these days and expensive for parents to go within school holidays. They ramble on about " a child can drop a grade in their SATs by losing a week of schooling... "

Okay then, so why use our schools for polling day?

Community centres, open air parks, town halls, sports centres, meeting rooms in hotels etc.

i say e-voting is the way forward.set up mobile computer cafes, more than viable

It is true.....but there really is no one to vote for...they really are as bad as one another. If the BNP werent so radical they would get my vote....and in this day and age i am appalled to say that!

I don't think the intention is to let the kids go shoplifiting. Maybe that's something to do with the parents and not the government:roll:

As for closing the schools for one day - it's one day every few years. In a democratic country it's important to provide people with a place to vote that is convenient.

It also gives British people the chance to do their two favourite things - queue and moan.

what i don't understand is, how people are so empathetic towards the nazis.

surely if feeling aggrieved one wouLd vote UKIP - hated by , the BNP.

UKIP is a more conservative BNP and the don't exactly shy away from the media. BNP voters are fascists plain and simple. UKIP is the sensible narrow-minded's choice.

I think this thread is a joke. No-one would complain about schools closing for one day every couple of years with any seriousness.

But it's good to remind people to get out the vote.

Simple solution - move voting to the weekend and have the polling days as Sat and Sun.......

(my kids school is closed and they only went back after half term on Monday)

A better solution would be to move elections to a Wednesday and give people a day off

    OR

spread voting over the course of a week.

One day off in school time:

Means parents have to make alternative arrangements and lose money they might ill afford to lose.

    Kids lose education time.

Teachers get paid for yet more holiday time.

Days for elections should be outside of School days - or held elsewhere.

It's one day every few years in the name of democracy. Although I'm not the greatest fan of voting, even I can't see why people are moaning about a day that hasn't exactly been sprung on you.

If they held them outside of school time, then people may be on holiday instead. There's no perfect time to hold an election so we have this precariously balanced middle ground.
