Eggs? To refrigerate or not refrigerate, that is the question...

Do eggs stay fresh longer in the fridge or does it not make a difference?

I think keeping eggs refrigerated lessens the risk of Salmonella due to the low temperatures preventing the bacteria to grow to the level required to make somebody sick.

I thought all eggs were treated for Salmonella, hence the lion mark kitemark?!!

I'd keep them in the chicken for as long as possible

I imagine they are; I'm just remembering back to science lessons. Putting them in the fridge regardless of whether there's a Salmonella risk might keep bacteria at bay and thus keep them fresher for a little longer. The only downside to keeping them in the fridge is that they crack better at room temperature, which is probably why my poached eggs always suck.

I don't know why but I have always kept them in the fridge, although they are not kept refridgerated in the supermarket etc.

Yes, but chances are they won't be on the shelf for long so they'll always be relatively fresh. They're a common product that most people buy, like bread or milk, so they'll soon be gone.

I just find putting eggs in the fridge 'un-natural'!!! Its makes me feel a bit icky!

If you don't want to put your eggs in the fridge, then don't. It's up to you. I like to keep them cool and out of the way. Plus, if I didn't, they'd be no use for the egg-tray in my fridge ;-)

Noooo never put eggs in the fridge.

My wife is a qualified chef and they used to get trashed if the teacher found eggs in the fridge.

They should be kept at room temp.

I keep them out, I had a friend who used to put some strange items in her refrigerator like bags of potatoes & pasta!

    Is this an eggs..act science?:)

you should NOT put your eggs in the fridge unless room temperature exceeds 22 centigrade. Eggs are porous and take on any smells from the fridge and also do not cook as well when cooking from fridge temperature

but do you keep the chicken in the fridge?

I've heard that the most important thing is to keep the eggs at a constant temperature. Fluctuations in temperature can cause the eggs to go off. As room temperature is variable it's therefore preferable to store eggs in the fridge.

Potatoes last longer when stored in the fridge, so long as you rip open the bag first. Light and warm temperatures make them go bad.

and if you use google they will ALL say never use it if it stored at the top in the door as it is too prone to temperature changes.

Keep going, you will crack it eventually.;-)
