Electric down at home... compensation rules.

Woke up this morning to no electricity - our electric went down sometime during the night last night. Called Southern Electric - we were the first to report it at 06:30. Found out around 20 mins ago its a mains fault (their side) and will take all day to fix.

Asked about freezer food compensation and were told that we cant get any unless its been 12 hours or more for them to fix FROM THE TIME ITS REPORTED. So basically if its been down most the night and it takes them 11 hours to fix - our food goes off and we cant claim!

Nice.

Usual occurance for us

One big clap of thunder and the power goes - so now, if a storm is predicted, I make sure I have put the hot water on in advance to save a cold wash in the morning

Never heard that bit from the time its reported though

Make sure you keep your freezer closed it will stay frozen for quite a while

Don't open your freezer and it should stay frozen for most if not all of the day. I would not expect the food to start to defrost and spoil until at least tomorrow.
Just because it's gone off does not automatically give you the right to claim from them. If the food spoils then yes but just because you have found the power off, definitely not.

One time, I had been freezer shopping a couple of hours before the power went off - so the bought groceries werent as frozen as they could be - the power was off for abt 18 hours and I lost the lot - they did give £50 compensation - but that's nothing to fill a chest freezer

Unless it went down within 5 mins of you reporting it, then I doubt you were the first to report it. They are just fobbing you off so see if you have any local area chat forums and find out if anyone else reported it. Your 12 hours starts then.

BTW, food should just about be ok for 12 hours with the freezer off.

home insurance can often cover this as well.

Aw thats awful you can't get much food for £50

I feel for you- hope it gets sorted quickly.

Your food hasn't even gone off yet and you are already moaning about compensation. It's a sad world we live in.

I wasnt planning on claiming unless the food went off. Of course there is the fridge contents too which I guess may be written off

The freezer food should hopefully be ok... depending on how long they take!

Sorry - been a bad morning - wasnt moaning about the compensation more that it could be 18 hours since it went off before its fixed and food could have gone off by then but cant claim as it will only have been 11 hours since the report. :whistling: We have around £130 worth of food in there as we filled it at the weekend.

Also - had a wing mirror smashed in overnight so can see why Im in this mood

Other than milk nothing in the fridge is going to die within a day. Why the insistant urge to claim compensation when so far, nothing is wrong.

I am up early (06:00) and when I called they asked me to check my mains as no one had reported anything. So I was the first. Got told an engineer would be sent ou. But then I got a call 20 mins later saying someone else had reported it so they wont send an engineer to our house as its not us...

put expensive fridge food in the freezer if the freezer temp gets to around zero.

As stated - I do not plan to claim unless I have to/will be out of pocket. Just surprised at the conditions...

Ah!, wrong side of bed syndrome, combined with the "it comes in 3's"
Know the feeling, we've all had a few of those.

Im hoping there wont be a 3rd thing... :?

:thumbsup:Fingers crossed

why not go own to the hire centre, you should be able to hire a generator for a few pounds, be quick because they will only have a few.
it will save you £130 to restock your freezer, you will probably find if you caim from your insurance you have to pay the first £50 anyway.

Just be glad you werent on a life support machine ,

You're kidding, you can get a 250 million piece party pack from Iceland for £50.....mmmmmmmmm

Can you get any of the expensive items into a neighbours freezer?

I'd imagine if it's a mains fault that's going to take all day to fix, their neighbour's power will be off too

Thanks for all the comments.

Cant hire anything as am at work and no one home. I leave for work at 06:40.

Whole street is out. Last update said they found lots of water in the generator room and had to get specialists in to fix the problem. Next update at around mid day. Bet you cant wait! lol.
