    Electrical Fault Queries (EU Law)

I'll start by saying "we've" had an unfortunate week regarding electricals. Firstly my television went click and then went to silicon hell.

And today my girlfriends television has decided that it doesn't want to play ball. Whilst looking for a new TV I came across the below article:

    dailymail.co.uk/new…tml

    Where it states:

EU law creates a minimum period of two years in which a faulty product can be returned, and in England and Wales the figure is six years.

Coincidently, my girlfriends TV is a technika, sounds a similar price to that of the article too.

My Television is/was a 32in Evesham. I bought it with a glass tv stand a few years ago, it was advertised on here, had 0% but unfortunately the company went bust but someone took over the finance and warranties.

So I'm looking for advise on what to do.

With my GF's do I ring trading standards and get my facts right before marching in there like a little mouse and squeeking at the duty CSR politely?

Mine, I don't know, I'm going to search HUKD for the tv i bought way back when, and see if i can get it covered, and repaired for free

Should read up to 6 years, with the Elonex one you're screwed as finance companies have no liability. I had that problem with Escom years ago. My extended warranty was worthless because the company went bust but I was still expected to pay for it......

cheers shengis, I know when the company went bust though, another company sent me a letter asking me if i'd like to take out extended warranty because they were taking over the finance...

not a huge loss, just means i'll have to fork out for a new tv and give the repaired one to my olds

does anyone have a link to the law as it is ?

its funny that its reported in the media but there is no actual evidence of the existence of the law!

Just do a google for 99/44/EC or visit BERR website and chuck it in their search box.

this could be fun, it's hard enough getting companies to abide by uk law but hey it's worth a shot
good luck with your jaunt through the european courts!

I rang Tesco head office today and they are sending me an Out Of Warranty claim form, so will hopefully be sorted soon

Update: Tesco's have sent me a letter saying they are sending me a cheque for x amount, however the cheque doesn't cover the full cost of a new 32" technika tv, just covers 2/3's of the costs.

should I await the cheque, then ring tesco's and see if they will pay the full amount, if i do that and they say tough poop were now going to cancel the cheque so your left with nothing...

or should i just pay the extra, and forget the principles... ie their product went faulty why should I have to folk out any money to buy a new one
