    £100 max for fuse board

    Don't be silly.

To remove and replace a consumer unit will cost what the OP has been quoted.

he quoted £280 all in OR £160 (only labour/ cert) so I buy the fuse board, but I wouldn't know where and what i'd need :?

i had a new consumer unit fitted in my summer house and i watched the sparky do it. proper easy to do in theory. reckon i could have done it if id of done a little research.

as yours is the main board id be reluctant to have a dabble, but seriously when he comes to do it, watch & learn how easy it cud have been to save £xxx

Let him supply the consumer unit, he will then be responsible for the whole job, not just his labour.
Do not attempt this job yourself

Electrician bro says that's standard if not cheap

No but they have to make a living...
Last summer I worked with a guy who runs his own building company and does most of the work himself. He is a fully qualified builder, electrician, and plumber.
We changed a fuse board in a house last summer and the job with our labour (2 of us, took us 3 days) cost £900, but that was for (afraid I am no electrician, and was doing the running about work) three new boards, which were supplying the house (10 bedroomed), the basement flat and a side flat.

Then they had sections rewired and redirected, which I didnt help on but I think the quote was a further £1100 (2 weeks for one guy).

It took 2 of you 3 days to change a fuse board? In that case I take it back, I thought people were talking about a couple of hours work for one guy.

Yeah complex wiring, which was very out of date, was even a fire hazard. Also it was technically supplying 3 properties, one of which was a 10 bedroomed house...thus not just one basic fuse board. But gives an idea of price of a similar job, although on a bigger scale.

you have to factor in travelling time, sourcing the parts and the initial inspection and problem diagnosis. You cant just think they charge labour for the time they arrive at your house to the time they leave.

£280 sounds quite reasonable imho. Bear in mind about £50 of that is probably VAT!

so you keep saying, so you got a good price, well done. Everyone else seems to think its a good price though. Why not give the OP the number of the firm you used so they can get the same good price?
What did yours actually cost you anyway as you said £500 inc a rewire, you didn't actually say what it broke down to?

well 24 hours labour comes to £441 @ £17.50 an hour (+vat) so the parts must have been cheap!
Regardless, the OP can't exactly use that electrician can they, and everyone else localish (like within a few hundred miles) seems to think its a pretty good price.

that seems like a reasonable price.

they may not be surgeons but what use is a surgeon when you need an electrician exactly?

regardless its a skilled job and they spend a good number of years training to get certified and deserve the cash they get........otherwise they couldnt command it

Dont be ridiculous. All tradesmen factor in travelling time when quoting. Only a fool would think otherwise.

    Thats a good price.

They not only have to take the old board off and fit the new one with cableing, the system has to be tested and part p certification issued.

Its especially a good price now a year on!

A new consumer unit complete with MCBs is around a hundred quid. Bear in mind the sparky will add his profit to this. Factor in removing the old board, labelling circuits and refitting to the new board then your probably not far wrong
