Electricity Bill Overpayment Assistance

Hello HUKD members, I was wondering if I could probe you for a little advice?

I have been going through some paperwork this evening and have discovered that my electricity bill payments do not reflect my actual usage (It does not appear to be due to the standard practice of over-payments during the summer, plus the heating I rarely use is actually a gas supply).

My supplier is British Gas and effectively they have been billing a standard direct debit of £29.00/pm for as long as I can remember. By July I was £80 in credit and it stands today at over £130.

I am definitely going to ask for an evaluation of my monthly debit, but has anyone had any success pursuing a refund? I don't really see why I should be over 4 months in credit, especially as my personal circumstances dictate that to be rather a large amount of money.

Thanks in advance.

It is definitely worth a call to ask if your monthly direct debit can be lowered, but they might give you the excuse that you may use more electriciity over the winter months, but worth a try! They are also gaining interest on your money, when it could be earning a little interest for you! They would be quick enough to get in touch should you be underpaying.

I am also with BG for my electricity and all you need to do is call and ask for a refund...
I got mine straight through with no problems.
The number I use to call them is 0800 045 0505 because its free.

I'm with Scottish Power and pay £110 a month, which is about right for winter months. However during the summer our usage drops to around £50 a month so we build up quite a credit. I just contacted customer services asked to re-evaluate our monthly direct debit and a refund for the credit. It was back in my account the next day.

Mine is £105 in the summer months, dread to think what it will be now its getting colder

They will refund you if you can show that you are continually overpaying once it's averaged out.

They did this with me with no fuss at all.

That's wonderful news, especially if the refund is so prompt. Rep for everyone.
Perhaps I can treat myself to Modern Warfare 2 now due to my frugal existence :-D

I live on my own but my actual usage is only around £15/pm, so it's quite scary to hear other people having to fork out so much for their family.
There's no way I could afford it

You are all giving me such confidence about a refund I'm almost tempted to go out and celebrate with a few pints (£1.20 a pint tonight, lol).

Sorry to hear about your astronomic gas bill, I've used just £11 worth since April 2007! It would be even less but the occasional pesky guest insist on it being on

they will be able to work out a new average on previous usage and maybe think about stopping dd for a couple of months if in credit as they are slow to refund ime

Result, just got off the phone to BG. £100 refund due in my account on the 16th Oct and a reduction in my direct debit.

They were amazingly helpful and prompt to answer my call. Thanks once again to fellow HUKD members.

good luck with your refund...hope it works out well for you, enjoy your game and few pints

People's gas and electric bills baffle me they differ so much, some people suggest leaving the heating on low most of the time in the winter rather than putting it on for say 3 hours a nite, some say it's cheaper leaving it on,but i'm too scared to try that incase the bills are sky high.

55 quid is VERY cheap,i bet most people don't pay that in a 3 bed house.

Have you got cavity wall insulation ?

in my job I often get asked about energy prices and people start asking why they are paying more for there energy than there neighbours who live in the same type of house, and it annoys me when energy companies use ‘averages’ for energy consumption. All houses are different when it comes to energy, different appliances, different lifestyles, different tariffs meaning different unit rates. In my line of work, best advice I can give is ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’. So if you’re not having problems then carry on as normal.

Sorry...rant over! lol
