    employment help

    Hi guys

I have been working for a company for 8 weeks now but have been offered a similar job with a company closer to home, starting tuesday.

Now what i want to know is if i dont give any notice to my present job (inset day tomorrow and b/h monday so would really help me if i dont go back) can they keep my week in hand wage as i will of 'broken my contract' by not giving notice.

But even if i go in tomorrow and tell them im leaving it still wont be much notice, so where do i stand here??

    thank you

i wasn't informed of any probation period

are you in a full time permanent contract?

I think it might be a weeks notice you have to give..As you havent been there very long..

this will be bad for future jobs... jumping around works against you as it shows you are not loyal.

do the best you can to patch things up with your current manager.. ie give them notice.

    what industry is this?

As far as I know they HAVE to pay you for the work you have done. Check a written contract - if you don't have one I think they have to pay you. No matter about notice - all they can do is take you to court for the loss of their earnings/cost to get someone else. Won't happen.

ive had no official contract as yet, ive signed nothing yet either

Depends on your contract, if you have one.
It is always best to give in your notice as a lot of firms phone your last employer to ask how you preformed and walking out on them is not going to make them think kindly of you.
It also helps to get a reference for future jobs.
Explain to them what has happened, it's better than just walking out with no explanation.
    Good luck

i had the same situation a few years now but was in the company for 4 weeks and even though I didnt think they would pay, and they said they wouldnt, a sum of money did make its way to my bank account!
Just tell them the situation tomorrow and use the closer to home sob story. Im sure they wont argue too much! Plus if you havent signed anything, they cannot hold you to notice if you havent had anything that says otherwise.
    Hope im right !

definately the right approach (and more kinly put than me!!)

try your best to get your current manager to see where you are comming from. and just give them a little heads up that they need to find someone else. Hopefully they will appreciate it.

just explain that its closer and more convienent for yourself to accept the other job, leave on a good term. good luck hun

Hey Lou, sorry I never saw this thread again. I used to be an HR person for the NHS, so have dealt with loads of this situations.

Honesty is always the best policy in these situations. It's all very well having a job to go to, but what about the job after that where they ask for your two last employers, etc? Just tell your current boss. If you don't have a contract, they will already know you could have just walked, and will respect you for the honesty. Also, there's always a chance there's something they could do to entice you to stay, or give you some kind words on your way!
