England Squad for 2016 European Championships

Found 16th May 2016
Difficult to argue with too many of the choices. Looks a bit light in defence at first glance with just 3 specialist central defenders and a mixture of relatively inexperienced full backs.

Can this squad succeed where the 'Dream Generation' of Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard and Ferdinand fell short?

Which 3 players would you anticipate being omitted from the final squad of 23?

Squad

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Tom Heaton (Burnley).

Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Andros Townsend (Newcastle United), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Strikers: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United).

I don't think we can win it with this squad unfortunately. I know these won't be the choices, but the 3 players I would leave at home would be Delph, Milner and Rashford.

The ''Dream Generation'' certainly didn't consist of any of those 4.

That was a commonly used term for that particular era. Anyway, back to 2016 .........

Sure.

As much as I want to get behind my country, I'd have to say there is no point booking our tickets to France. Jack Wilshere has started 1 game for Arsenal this season. Fabian Delph has been garbage for City, and the most bizarre decision - taking Marcus Rashford over Jermain Defoe. Hodgson hasn't a clue. I'll be getting behind them, but I can't say I'm expecting much.

There could be a case for dropping 3 midfielders, but only if it is decided before the tournament that Rooney is going to be used as a midfielder rather than a striker.

Yes, it's my own comment.

Mark Noble should be IN
Delph & Wilshere should be OUT

we're gonna need another centre back, Jagielka probably

I do normally have better things to do than trawl the interwebs looking for comments made by members on this site and cross referencing them against comments on other sites, honest!

I had just read that comment when yours appeared on here X)

I'd drop Barkley, Delph and Rashford.

I do like Barkley, however Roy doesn't like him to express himself on the pitch which makes him a pointless selection in my opinion - unless he allows him to play the way he likes to play.

Deeney is far too fat, Animal.

apparently Roy has said that Walcott hasn't quite played enough to be in the squad...but obviously sicknote Wilshere has (_;)

i think the old fella is just trolling us now X)

Wilshere - 141 minutes.

When you look at teams such as Germany,Spain etc and all their players are playing top tier football with the worlds elite week in/week out then you have to question the selection.

delph drinkwater and wilshire

Only 5 weak/overrated players imo, rashford / Dier / smalling / Henderson and sterling.

It looks solid, going forward we should be a threat but at the back is a worry.

Glad Andros has made the squad, he is a real quality player that is always underrated. Far better than oxlade / Walcott & sterling.

They may play among but Not against worlds elite tho, the premiership is a stronger league as its not about just 2 or 3 teams like Spain Italy and Germany.

I'd drop Wilshere, Delph and Sturridge.

Sturridge ?why

I didn't even notice Wilshire was in the squad? That's insane he hasn't even played this season, so in fair!

Woy really hasn't got a clue, Wilshere ffs? Milner gets shown up as soon as we play a half decent team and should be nowhere near an England shirt & Delph hasn't had enough first team football and is another average player.
It's sad because it showed against Germany away that if we pick an inform team we can compete with the better teams.
He's a stubborn old dinosaur that will no doubt ruin the slim chance we had of doing well. I just hope when he's gone we get a decent manager as I just don't understand how we have one the best & most lucrative leagues in the world but hire such mediocre managers?

Exactly , noble should be in the squad, brilliant talent that is always overlooked, Wilshere has being picked over him, it's crazy!

I agree. The ''141'' minutes is key here though.

Snakeyes646

Sturridge ?why

Not done enough really to show why he should be in the squad, coupled with the fact he will probably get injured. I just think that Vardy and Kane are definitely ahead of him and so take Rashford, wont necessarily play but have him in and around the team for experience.

Delph, Wilshere and Rashford won't be going.

Sturridge has averaged 122.38 minutes per goal in 2016 when he has been majoritively fit. He's twice the player Rashford is for the time being. That being said, he hasn't scored for England for 23 months...

100% agree. whast the point for players like Mark Noble who I rate. plays like a boss all season yet hodgsons favourites always get in. wilshre has played a handful of minutes and he goes. might has well take luke shaw from the treatment table. its a joke. a player who has spent all season injured and played one full game gets to go.

Im an LFC fan but Llalana, no way. decent player but no. Henderson as well, should not go as Milner and Dier can make up the defensive midfield options. Mark Noble should have had a chance by now. He's a good tackler, good passer and intelligent in his play. shoddy from managers who have over looked him over the years.

If you are a LFC fan then I have no idea how you can say no to Lallana! Henderson I can understand, but Lallana's creativity makes him a perfect sub.

As usual they will struggle to beat the minnows in their group and then get easily beaten in the quarter finals if we get that far.

National team is an embarrassment and Rooney as captain is further embarrassment.

The tournament will be much better when England are on the early plane home.

He can't spell Lallana either.

I would drop Delph, Wilshere & Rooney (although Rooney is a favorite of Hodgson, so realistically Rashford to be dropped).

Smalling along with De Gea have been United's best players and one of the main reasons we have one of the best defensive records in the prem. Clearly you're just a bitter red. Rashford has been sensational, he's scored some very important goals and carried us to the FA cup final. Scored against City and Arsenal. I can understand why he's a risky choice but wouldn't argue with it, Clearly he's not a bottler like some and playing against the likes of Germany in a final wouldn't be an issue, he could score an hat trick he is worth a gamble.

Rooney being a favourite is nonsense. He is england Captain, record scorer and led us through qualifying. He has been out for a while true but it's not like he's hodgsons old mate from the pub!

You won't be supporting the team this summer then? Sadly you won't be missed. Might be worth googling the definition of supporter too without putting glory infront as that's most likely what you are.

Anyway I'll let you get off, you probably want to rush down sports direct and trade your man city shirt in for a Leicester one before the big parade later.

Have to disagree; seriously believe this England team are the real deal.
They have a very very good chance of having what it takes to win.

We don't want to take subs, we want to take complete players, which rules Lallana out.

We're taking 23 players - not everyone will play! Lallana could and probably would be a starter in 4-2-3-1.
