English language 'losing importance' in the dark world of Juncker

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has told a conference in Italy on the EU that "English is losing importance in Europe".
Amid tensions with the UK over looming Brexit negotiations, he said he was delivering his speech in French.
"Slowly but surely English is losing importance in Europe and also because France has an election," he said, explaining his choice of language.
He called the UK decision to leave the EU "a tragedy".
Laughter and applause greeted his comment about the English language, and he could be seen smiling wryly.

Maybe Juncker has been boozing too much lately.

Try working for any major European company, their official languages are almost always English. Even Siemens as an example have this policy. Any international meetings are therefore held in English. He's on the wind up and shows the petty nature of these people. If their club was so great the UK wouldn't want to leave.

I thought leaving the Britannia music club was hard but seems Junker and pals will make this as painful as possible just to spite the Brits.

it's a wonder he can understand any lanugue with the amount of alcohol in his system.

English has become the language of the world, Juncker is talking junk!

Even when they're not drunk the french sound like their drunk, must be their pronunciation or being taught French by their lagging/ drunk teachers.

English is an official language of the EU. After the UK leaves he EU then there will only be one country, the Republic of Ireland - with its population of 4.6 million and the 15th largest economy in the EU, which speaks English. That is the context, and with the UK leaving the EU in the next couple of years it stands to reason that English is becoming less important.

But it is quite clear that he is talking about the EU and English … But it is quite clear that he is talking about the EU and English becoming less important within the EU. He's not talking about the rest of the world, or other countries that are in Europe but not the EU.

apols, i misread it, quite agree with you.

    Seems fairly obvious really.

Why would they converse in a language which isn't natural to them and none of the member states will speak the language?

Correct. It is spite. He can make those claims AFTER we have left and I'm quite sure Mrs Merkel will come forward with her recommendation that Europe must speak German.

    G'day mate.

Do you think there will be a law passed by the EU banning English being taught in schools?

I like how Americans always get the brunt of disgruntled people when it comes to English dialect, never mind other forms of dialect both nationally and globally.

I don't know, the Dublin accent get a raw deal too. Try getting a Dubliner to say 'Thirty Three and a Third' (_;)

It is the most important world language for the other 7 billion people around the world and that's exactly why we're leaving the EU and looking towards the world

And what exactly has that got to do with the price of fish?

Perhaps the EU will threaten to outlaw the teaching of English in remaining member state schools. What about banning airline pilots from communicating in English whilst flying over Mainland Europe.

I just wish the nation would not respond to this kind of nonsense.

They just use different words than we do for certain things. The same thing happens up and down the UK, as well as the way in which people pronounce words.

And as you brought up spelling:

    *than
    *that's
    *there's
    *eggplant
    *butt

It has everything to do with the context of what was said. I said as much in my original comment and didn't really expect to have to point that out... The UK is leaving the EU, therefore English will become less important in the EU.

So do other forms of English language, like Jamaican Standard English. I'm just not sure why criticism is usually directed at American English.

Because they changed it deliberately then started telling other people to speak their version, it didn't evolve or anything mr webster deliberately wrote a dictionary full of wrong spelling to differentiate America from Britain

It was said for a reaction, which it received. Just speak in French if that's what he wanted to do, I'm sure no one would have batted an eyelid. In fact as far as I'm concerned if I never understood another word that emanated from Juncker's mouth it would be a step in the right direction.

As with all these negotiations, I'll judge them by actions, not words. Talk is cheap.

We use it but Gaelic is our mother tongue.

He's playing the UK eurosceptics beautifully. Hook line and sinker. The EU really want a strong UK government who will go along with the secret plan that they have already negotiated under the table with the Conservative government. They really, really do not want to deal with a government led by Jeremy Corbin, or a coalition. So this sort of comment, and the leaks regarding dinners with May, etc, are designed to wind up the previously UKIP voters, but also allow May to trash talk about "Brussels Eurocrats" and seem abrasive and tough, which is exactly the sort of rubbish that Brexiteers lap up - hence the collapse in UKIP support and movement to the Conservatives. It's all a charade for the gullible.

The Brexiteers are going to get their Brexit but I bet by six months from now it won't look like the Brexit they were expecting!

Juncker is a waste of space to be perfectly honest - I very much doubt this recent comment is part of a secret master plan, he's just a nasty piece of work full stop.

English will always be king when it comes to language regardless.

I expect it involves freedom of movement and £50 Billion+.

England leaves EU and EU say the language is losing its importance to them... correct.

It actual shows the massive respect England and the UK have been given in the EU.

Why when we are out would be expect them to speak our language?

Next Brexiters will be expecting the French to continue honouring the deal to police our borders and keep many asylum seekers from our shores....

It's not like people are expecting to have their cake and eat it is it???

English is firmly entrenched as the world language and has been for years. The French have always had a chip on their shoulder about it.
Nothing new here and whatever he says it won't make one jot of difference. Silly pompous waste of space. Just ignore him.

But we are still part of it. And I suspect the Irish might not agree with your POV either.

OTOH if we have left already, that's good news as they can cry all the way to the European Court of Justice knowing they no longer have any jurisdiction.
