    Error Message: The File or Directory Is Corrupt...

    I Get this error message when I try to open my External Hard Drive,

    Does anyone know how to fix this?
    any tricks of software I can use to fix this?

    Type In this in Command Prompt:
    chkdsk (letter of drive)

    Eg If D: was corrupted type
    chkdsk d:

    after doing that it says

    "Connot open volume for direct access." (in the black command prompt window)

    then it closes

    chkdsk ?: /F /X

    Have you tried plugging it into another USB port or another computer?
    What Operating System are you using?

    I had this and tried everything ended up using a file recovery program to get files back then reformat, touch wood not had any problems with it since then.

    Try de-fragging it. If not then you a file recover program to get the files back then format the external hard drive.

    i shall try defrag it when i get home in the eveing.

    Any other possible solutions?

    i cant seem to defrag as I cannot right click on it.
