EU negotiators will offer British citizens an individual opt-in to remain EU Citizens - let's see how many avid Brexiters put their money where their mouth is

EU negotiators will offer British people the chance to individually opt-in and remain EU citizens as a proposal in Brexit negotiations, the European Parliament’s chief negotiator has confirmed.

Mr Verhofstadt said the “very important” proposal had “captured the imagination and hopes” of many British people who wished to retain their rights as EU citizens and would be in his negotiating mandate.

The proposal could potentially give Brits who live and work across borders a workaround to the disruption caused by the Leave vote – and young people looking to flee an increasingly isolated UK greater choice over where to move to.

Depending on the approach taken by EU negotiators, the idea would likely be subject to approval by the British government.

Now let's see how many of the die hard Brexiters on here will ignore this option and maintain exclusively "British".

Why do I have a strange feeling that more than a considerable amount of the 52% who voted leave will be signing up to this.
I bet even some of the prominent Leave campaigners will sign up to it.

If only there was the option for all those who voted out to be automatically excluded from this option.

Thoughts?

I'm British. I'll remain British after we Brexit.

Depends if they still get what they want? If they do, surely it's win win?

Last time I looked most people who voted Brexit didn't do it out of xenophobia, and indeed most enjoy European countries and cultures a lot. They simply didn't want the other rubbish which came with it.

So there could be individual membership costs. That could work. I wonder if it will be a life contract or if there would be the ability to dip in and out at will. Of course part of your membership plan might be having to house and sponsor your very own EU lodger X)

I'm intrigued in seeing your response to this once Brexit is confirmed and this option is available to all.
If you voted out you shouldn't be given this olive branch.

Don't see how it would work, but I wouldnt be in. I expect a lot of 'leavers' would be tho. I see some of the leave campaign (in the media) is already whinging that there might be an option besides half the country being forced to leave against their will, also wouldn't other European countries block this unless their citizens could move freely to the UK? or would it be a trade off, one of yours for one of ours:|

I'm in for the visa free travel.

If you voted out you shouldn't be allowed to "opt-in" as an EU citizen. Doing so would be hypocrisy at it's worst.

You're also a citizen of the EU and this gives you the option to remain so. How good is that? X)

I don't think 52% of the voters even want this olive branch so it's only to appease the 48%.

No thanks.

won't happen, fictionalised nonsense, how do they maintain EU citizenship? by paying taxes direct to the EU instead of HMRC how will other EU countries know which British are EU and are not?
This is probably a decoy ploy to reassure the remainers that "everything will be OK"

There are Leave Voters ITT already disagreeing with you.

At least you are sticking to your (questionable) morals. Out should mean out as those on here such as yourself have stated hundreds of times. Can you have a word with your fellow Leave voters suggesting otherwise?

Don't really care what other users want to do. I voted to leave the EU and think it would be hypocritical of me if I chose to go for "dual nationality"

If it's like for like it might be a good idea, I wouldn't be taking up the option though, I love this democratic Country. I'll love it even more when we regain our independence. I suspect there will be terms that have a negative impact though so I'll reserve judgement.

Now that would make my day if you opted in.

A person would be a fool not to take something up if it were advantageous to them. If I could be outside the EU and still have all the benefits of the special travel zones etc. why would I turn that down? I will eat as much cake as is being offered!

Not even if it made it easier for you to work outside the country? X)

Fair play to you though. Personally I think it would be easier if we just let the places that wanted to remain as part of the EU form their own country and the rest leave. Obviously that would mean the remain side taking most of the wealth and talent, but it would solve a lot of problems.

£100 and they will have won me over.

If you don't take them up you face visa requirements, payments, restrictions on movement, no right to live etc

You might want to think about what you lose by not being an EU citizen AS WELL AS British

well least we know how you voted...

thing is MATE...

Brexit gives us back our sovereignty, and that is the right to govern ourselves. That means no longer will we be at the behest of Brussels, or when some terrorist claims EU human rights laws to remain in our country. Brexit also gives us a chance to get rid of all the ''British'' Liberals who are as far removed from being British as can be and will run away into the EU arms. Bye Bye. Dont come back.

If you want to bend over and take it daily from some unelected German millionaire.... then go ahead take your proposed EU card.... and stay over there.... Just dont come crying when when you hit 60 and your heart fails and no-one over there gives a toss.

We need to grow from within before we can even consider opening our doors. We have a housing crisis because the two main government party's do nothing to stop foreign purchasers. We have social inequality because its millionaires running the country (77% are millionaires) and then we have the liberals who want to eat lettuce and let terrorists in.

Great, means l don't have to look for a EU citizen to marry!

I haven't read the article so shoot me down if I'm wrong.

I would imagine the eu citizens will have the same choice so everybody is equall and happy , Win Win

No?

Will the EU citizens be getting the same option? I think it is just free movement in a dress. It's not what we voted for.

The only places I would move to are OUTSIDE of the EU.
The only places I go for holiday are OUTSIDE of the EU.
Not gonna make any odds to me.

I can see this sitting well with Germany, France and Italy.

I'm sure I could dig up some statistical measurements that would suggest that someone like me was. There's nothing wrong with recognising that you're exceptional in one area, just like there's nothing wrong with admitting you're unexceptional in another.

I'm sure you view being exceptional in any way as something 'bad' despite you choosing to support your football team for that very reason.

Because most of us were born in an EU country but we need to move on from telling people to move abroad if they disagree with Brexit.
