# ever had trouble dividing numbers by 4096?

thought you did, well the simplest way is to get a calculator.

But if you don't one handy do it in your head or get a pen and paper, firstly 4096=2^12=2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2

say you want to divide 72 by 4096, that is

72/(2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2)

=72/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2/2

=72x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2x1/2

so all you need to do it half 72, half it again, then again, and again until you have halved it 12 times, easy isn't it.

Lets do it,

36, 18, 9, 4.5, 2.25, 1.125, 0.5625, 0.28125, 0.140625, 0.0703125, 0.03515625, 0.017578125 and there we have it.

having trouble halving numbers well ain't it your lucky day,

lets say i wat to halve 548677

we just halve each number seperately, but it its odd number you need to take away 1 and half it. Next rule is if the number before is odd we need to add 5 to our halved number.

5 is odd, 5-1 is 4, half that is 2

4 is even, half that is 2 previous number was odd so add the 5 which is 7

8 is even, half that is 4

6 is even, half that is 3

7 is odd, 7-1 is 6, half that is 3

7 is odd, 7-1 is 6, half that is 3, but the previous number was odd so add 5 which is 8

after decimal point

0 is even, half that is 0, previous number was odd so add 5 which is 5

0 is even, half that is 0

so we have our number halved which is 274338.5

wondeful stuff isn't it

for more realistic division like dividing by 8 just half a number 3 times, or by 4 then half the number 2 times.
