it is kind of awkward, "excuse me, these are my seats" makes you feel like a bit of a tossa.

That would be my first instinct:thumbsup:

Ask politely for them to move as they have sat in your seat. Simples.

If that doesn't work, punch them in the face when a tunnel comes along:whistling:

thats me without a drink in me.

It happened to me, I smiled sweetly and politely showed them my ticket, they apologised and moved.......

Yes, in this country people are quick to apologise and move.

I had a huge stand-up row in Italy twenty odd years go when we got on a packed train in Milan to Venice. Family ( mum dad etc) group from Turin at first convinced me that I was mistaken and our seats were in a different carriage, so me hubby and our two kids went up and down looking for them, then returned for the stand-up with the offenders, who still refused to budge, then had to find a conductor to turf them out. I was not at all pleased on a Friday evening after a hard week at work. :x

Anyway, you're still entitled to your seat no matter what.:-D

if there were available seats nearby i would sit on them and say nothing otherwise id show them my ticket and get them to move, if they refused to move id sit on their knee

Paper reservations affixed to the seat are common where reservations are available.

Some newer units have displays above the seats which show either 'Reserved From xxx to xxx' or 'Available'

Virgin's Pendolinos & Voyagers have them fitted.

oh right, only ever been on a train a few times, never seen reserved or anything, mind only ever travel trash class

It is so funny watching people getting all arsey when they are sat in someone else's seat and they are challenged about it

Why is it? They are the one that should be ashamed! The seat will have a reserve ticket on it or show reserved on the small screen above the seat. Can't help it if they can't read! Just tell them to shift their butt!

me and my girlfriend reserved seats on a train from scarburgh to edinburgh, when we got on somebody was sitting on our seats, the carridge was empty so we sat on two other seats, a couple of stops later a women and her kid got on and informed us that we were in their seats and we had to move  :x

I might or might not ask them to move, depends what I thought at time their reaction because I could just go and ask guard to move them on,which be easier.

it's just like the movies

tell them to shift

(i mean, it's like when you have reserved seats at the movies, not like a scene out of some LA gangster flick or something)

i will ask them to move if there are no other seats if not i'll just find somewhere else to seat, i hardly ever seat on the seats i reserve so im not too bothered lol

" Excuse me, I believe you may be sitting in my seat".......no biggie, you have paid and are entitled to the seats if you want to sit in them ;-)

If they're big and mean and nasty, you go find another seat ;-)

If they look like reasonable people you explain the seats were already booked....

Pick your battles wisely, it's not cowardice to walk away from a fight, it's good judgement x x

You should ask them to move because if you then have to sit in other reserved seats the cycle continues....I do ask. I think it's downright rude of people to take reserved seats.

Yeah, this happened the last time I was on the train...there was plenty of space on the train but I reserved a table window seat, so I can rest my laptop and look out the window when I'm bored...the guy almost jumped out of his skin and moved over and couldn't apologise enough. :giggle:

What can I say...I want it all but at least I was pleasant about it.

Are you only saying that because of the threads about cooking tips and jewellery? :giggle:

I can assure you, the guy wasn't scared because I look like a lady. :whistling:

As with most people I'd ask them to move as on most trains they have all the reservations together which means if you take another seat nearby you may have to move. I've seen some cases where a few people have taken a nearby seat rather than get someone to move then someone else joining has decided they want their seat causing a good portion of the carriage to reshuffle.

In most cases I find people are ok about it as they know they're sitting in a reserved seat and there's a chance someone may come to claim their seat so they just hop out. However there have been a couple of occasions when a couple have settled into a pair of reserved seats with no intention of moving for anyone which is a pain in the neck.

i reserved 2 table window seats london - leeds few weeks ago and i noticed all 4 seats had reservation tickets on them......checked our seats and they were the ones opposite each other at the window.......got to reading and an older couple got on and were looking at us then he eventually spoke up and said "those are our seats, we reserved them" in a snotty manner. i asked him which seats did he reserve and to check again....he realised his mistake and went and sat somewhere else in embarrasment while his wife apologised

you gotta realise that the operator/conductor places reserve tickets on the morning.

so the seat could be reserved from 2pm to 3pm, but it doesnt mean it isnt available for the whole day, only that time period.

alot of you have missed this important factor.

It's not been missed....you're not chucking them out of a seat that isn't yours to sit in...you asking them to move because you ARE there...so it IS reserved at that time.

Can't say I randomly walk up and down trains looking for reserved tickets and say "excuse me someone reserved this seat for 2pm, please move" lol

oh yeah i totally understand that at that particular time they should move....but if youve been sat in the same seat for 2 hours sometimes one forgets these things and needs a gentle reminder.
