'Ex-Aston Villa Player Dalian Atkinson' Dies In Police Tasering

    Editor
A man who died after he was shot by police with a Taser gun has been named locally as ex-Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson.

Officers were called to a home in Meadow Close, Telford, Shrophire in the early hours of this morning amid concerns "for the safety of an individual".

West Mercia Police said the 48-year-old man was given medical treatment after being hit by a stun gun but died around 90 minutes later.

Police cordoned off Meadow Close in Telford
An unnamed neighbour said: "I had known him since he was a little boy, he was a famous footballer at one time. He was friendly, he had no trouble that I know of."

An ambulance spokesman said while the man was being taken to Princess Royal Hospital his condition deteriorated and he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.

In 1994, he scored at Wembley as Villa beat Manchester United to lift the League Cup.

Atkinson started his career at Ipswich and then played for Sheffield Wednesday and Spanish side Real Sociedad before moving to Villa.

The police use of Tasers is intended as a non-lethal weapon.

The incident has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Police said in a statement: "West Mercia Police can confirm that officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1.30am this morning at an address in Telford.

"Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am.

"West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure, and will assist the IPCC with their inquiries."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called by West Mercia Police to an address in Meadow Close in the Trench area of Telford at about 1.45am this morning.

"An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered.

"As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest.

"Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival."

The police use of Tasers rose slightly towards the end of 2015 with 10,329 uses by forces in England and Wales - a 2% increase compared with 2014.

maybe best to leave the hysteria for after any investigation, same article quotes

"Dalian Atkinson was reportedly trying to kick in the door of his dad’s home before police were called this morning.

Neighbours say the former premiership striker’s 85-year-old dad had barricaded himself inside the Telford home, where he grew up, and was claiming he was homeless.

A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I found out what had happened last night, when I heard the commotion outside - it was frightening."

Terrible news as well as very puzzling with lack of details currently.

Where is the hysteria? I just quoted part of an article same as you.

Tasering and pepper spray also seems to happen a lot in England. Rarely here of it happening in Scotland.

picking out one quote acts like hysteria when there is balance in the article that is quoted from. other forums are even playing the racial card already which is a sad state of affairs when no one knows the actual facts

The police will likely get villafied for this...

Main thing I remember about Dalian Atkinson was the League Cup final against United, when Karen Brady asked Big Ron if Dalian was his son oO

Sad joke. The guy is dead.

(and for anyone who doesn't get it..... Villa fied)

I remember him in his playing days too.

Wonder what happened for him to get tasered outside his fathers home. Possibly was wielding a knife or something?.

Tasering is not supposed to kill, but sometimes it does happen. Maybe they need to drop the voltage of the taser or something. I think thats the 8 or 9th death in 10 years now from a taser, which isn't good.

It's just a joke; lighten up...

Rest In Peace. We will find what actually happened but all weapons carry a risk.

Just seen the headline on bbc text and remembered his goal and the celebration afterwards.

I guess it was down to booze or drugs...

"Atkinson's dad Ernest, 85, said his son – who frequently visited him – became agitated shortly before he was Tasered by the cops.

Speaking from his home today, he said: "He was in a real state.
"I don't know if he was drunk or on drugs but he was very agitated and his mind was upset.
"The last thing he said to me was 'don't move' when the police came to the door.

"He was threatening and very upset. I didn't call the police but someone else did.
"He got Tasered in the street outside in the road. I didn't see him but I saw a flash. I haven't had any sleep and cannot take it in.
"The police are dealing with this now."

A neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said the former Premier League ace was hammering on his dad's door in the early hours.
The neighbour added: "There was a lot of banging and shouting, and doors being kicked in."

    Play with someone else Fred

On BBC news they are reporting that he had kidney trouble & was undergoing dialysis... and a neighbour/witness says she saw police repeatedly kick Mr Atkinson.

Police probably relieved there's no video footage!!

    say it then

Really sad to hear this. Premier league players now are a lot more clued on but back when the prem started and big money Ju started to flow, I'm sure these guys were not getting the best advice.

I do remember the villa team of the early 90s of mcgrath, Staunton, stone, and obviously Atkinson with big Ron as manager.

I do wonder about a lot of the players from that generation and how they are coping. Maybe the prem could use some of their vast wealth to help put former players, not necessarily financially but more emotional/mental health related.

video footage would help to clarify the situation and explain why they were forced to use the taser on a bloke who had become violent so police would probably hope that there was video footage.

I've tidied this thread up as it had taken a wrong turn and was heading somewhat off topic

Their talking about the witness apparently ''hearing the boots hit'' Mr Atkinson. Not sure if that actually has a sound to it?.

RIP. I'm sure it was accidental and I trust the police in this country not to be ignorant in any form, it must be hard not be biased towards certain groups. But they manage to keep their focus on the job at hand and do a wonderful one.
I do believe these taser guns should be looked at again. I'm sure they help in situations where there is extreme violence but when there is a potential for it to kill it needs to be revisited.

Mr Atkinson's brother, Kenroy, 53, told The Sun the ex-Premier League … Mr Atkinson's brother, Kenroy, 53, told The Sun the ex-Premier League star had undergone dialysis for kidney failure and was "not in his right mind".He said his brother had attacked their 85-year-old father, Ernest, at his home on Monday before police were called to the scene."My brother had lost it. He was in a manic state and depressed - out of his mind and ranting. He had a tube in his shoulder for the dialysis and he had ripped it out and was covered in blood," he told the newspaper."He got Dad by the throat and said he was going to kill him. He told Dad he had already killed me, our brother Paul and sister Elaine and he had come for him. He was not in his right mind."We are all devastated. Our family is heartbroken."

My heart goes out to the officers that will now face months and months of uncertainty about their careers as well as the inevitable mess it will cause.

    Taken from the link:

On Monday Mr Atkinson's nephew, Fabian Atkinson, suggested officers would not have used the stun gun if they had known the ex-striker's medical history.

He said: "He had some health issues that he was trying to get through and that's why his heart was weak."

Perhaps Officers should complete all the necessary paperwork to obtain medical records, submit them to court and wait for them to be rubber-stamped, prior to stopping a potential murderer, in future.

I just read this guy had just threatened to kill his dad before he got tazzered, true or not who knows.?

The police cant win and seem to get it wrong regularly like giving a dangerous dog back to its owner and then it goes and kills a guy in the street.

he threatened to kill his dad. taser was the correct response then with the information at hand.

2 burly, highly trained Police Officers and one 48 year old man.

There certainly needs to be an enquiry to ensure that the use of a taser was really justified.
