    EXCEL help please....

    Hi,

I'd be grateful for some help please.

..... re-worded, hope this makes sense

I'm working on a spreadsheet with drop down lists (validation). Is there a way that I can make the list automatically select what I want from the drop down list rather than me physically having to click on the drop down selection arrow and then click on the word?

Whenever I work in columns with no validation, if a word is started to be typed in which is repeated above, it automatically types the whole word for me. Is there anyway this can be done in validation mode?

    Thank you

I dont understand what your actually asking BUT you should be able to copy and paste into validation so long as it matches...or you could drag & copy down

Its not really using the entry above but valid entries from the validation selection entries. Why not just limit the validation to single or double letters (e.g Y,N etc).

It does auto fil in the word in validated columns. The only time it doesn't is if you leave balnk cells inbetween the same values (which is the same for none validated lists anyway).

this is what I thought. Excel version may help - could be office 97 for all we know lol

    Hi,

If the list of items you wish to validate against is placed at the top of same column as your data entry cells, & your Validation Source is pointing at the range of items, you will find that any cells below the list will then adopt the "AutoComplete" function you described.

You can choose to hide the rows that contain the Validation List items if you wish.

Also, don't forget to ensure that the "Tools" / "Options..." / [Edit] / "Enable AutoComplete for cell values" check-box is checked.

For example, in column A type in rows 1 to 6:
    A000
    A100
    A200
    A300
    A400
    A500

Then select cell A7 & use the "Data" / "Validation..." menu option.

Use the "List" criteria & set the Source to be:
    =$A$1:$A$6

Check the "In-cell dropdown" check-box & confirm with the dialog's [OK] button.

    Start typing in cell A7...

If you type A5 you find that "A500" is auto-completed for you.

Hide rows 1 to 6 if desired.

    BFN,

    fp.
