hi im about to order my new tv, a panasonic px70. i can get it from dixons for &768 with 12 months warranty or from richer sounds for around £812 with 5 years warranty. is it worth me paying the extra for the 4 years? and how often do plasmas go wrong?

thanks

plasmas are less reliable than lcd. pay the extra 40 pounds for peace of mind.

if a plasma is kept on the same image for a while the image will 'burn' onto the screen leaving a ghost image of the image left on.. Not sure about newer plasmas but it happens to older ones

That are the effects of plasma burns

Are you ordering online or instore?
If you can get to a Richer Sounds branch just go in with a printout of the price from Dixons & see if that's their best price. A store manager will often look at the margin he's making on a sale & can then decide if it's better to make a little profit & take the business off someone else or stick to his or her guns & loose the sale (they don't know that you'll probably go with their price because of the extended warranty).
You won't have this option online but if you go the online route don't forget that Quidco offer 4% (I think) on TV sales from Dixons - they don't do Richer Sounds...don't know about other cashback schemes.

very good example to show you what plasma is like. if i were you i would go with the one with 5 year warranty. only 40 pound more thats less than 10 pound per year.

i was going to order online so i can make use of quidco and some discount codes but im not too bothered if i have to visit richer sounds to get them to try and lower the price a little. i think it may just be better to spend the bit extra, at least that way i no if anything does happen im covered.

doesnt take a genius to work out the buyer will benefit in the long run

4 years for £50 odd extra

its like £12 a year well worth it!

actually like £20 a year but yeah think its better to go for the five years extra. so just show the guy at richer sounds what price i can get it for at dixons and he may be able to lower his, should i also take a screen shot of the quidco discount available?

If it really looks like the manager's not gonna budge or doesn't offer as much off as you'd like then continue to bargain by asking if they can throw any extras like decent audio leads. This sort of item can be expensive if you need to buy it afterwards as an 'upgrade' from the standard supplied leads/cables & they'll obviously only be loosing the cost price so are often happier with this kind of thing to swing the sale.

(Throwing Quidco into the equation might just confuse the issue as it's never guaranteed)

Good point about quidco as your never guaranteed to get it.

we once got quidco on a tv we never got. Ordered from misco, it went missing (courier stole it, damn city link) misco refunded. 3 months later we get £36 quidco payment.

modern plasma's dont really have the burn-on problem anymore.

Extended warranty is worth it for any expensive item, of course it could so happen that your TV became 'damaged' just as it got old..........
