    Extended warrenty

    I put my laptop in for repair under my extended warranty plan due the back light on the LCD giving up, after a week I rang them to see if there's any news on the repair, after all they did say I would take 3 to 5 days and they told me that they are awaiting delivery of a inverter and a keyboard (dunno why it needed a keyboard I had no problems with it) a week later I chased it up again and I then get told they were waiting on a LCD panel but can't get stock and the that their head office would be in touch to see if I would like a replacement laptop /another one as near as spec that they do have or a refund less the ageing of the machine, so today I get the call but they told me due to them no longer stocking the laptop my laptop they can only offer me a refund less the devaluation over the 2 and 1/2 years that I've owned the laptop .
    Is this right? if so what's the point of offering a two year extended warranty?

    it was Samsung direct and I'm covered by their fast track extended warranty well till August

    And they are well within their rights to offer a part refund due to the usage you have already had with the laptop. That is the law I am afraid.

    But look on the bright side, I suppose a tenner is better than nothing.

    Really? so its not worth fighting for another then? what sort of refund did you end up getting ? I can see them coming back to me with some silly offer

    A tenner is what I can see there offer coming back as....lol

    It all depends on the warranty wording, basically they can offer you whatever they want if they outlined it in the warranty policy. Have a look at it, usually warranties will give you the equivalent laptop, and if this is not available, the amount of money to buy one. Simple.

    Check out the policy wording. And don't buy from them again lol. Go to a proper retailer.

    I have never had it happen, I just know the law and they will offer you a part refund based on the time you have used the laptop.

    Could actually be quite low, I would personally refuse the first offer and they may come back with an improved one.

    To tell you the truth, extended warranties are a complete and utter waste of money. Never take out an extended warranty. But on the other hand you could complain that the product was not fit for it's purpose. And that 2.5 years is not an acceptable length of time for the item to fail in.

    Few people know but under UK law the goods have to be fit for the purpose they were sold, kitchen appliances, tv's etc should last you at least 5 years, if they fail within this time frame you can push your claim for a refund or replacement.

    Computers are different as graphics cards and stuff have a short life span and these are limited to just one year.

    When I asked how much they would offer they said that their systems were down and that I would receive a offer in the post, I think he knew full well that I was not going to be happy with what ever they offered...lol

    Don't accept first offer, never ever accept first offer in any insurance or warranty claim. You will always get a second better offer, it's the way things work.

    They sent you cheque, that is their offer, you don't accept it, you get back in touch and tell them you are not accepting it and they will give you a counter offer. You never accept the first offer.

    To be fair this is the way it works with car insurance and personal injury claims, It won't do no harm in trying it not like they are going to say "well sir your laptop is now a week older so we now offer you a fiver"....lol

    Look here pal, I am giving my advice on what to do best for the OP. I am correct 100%, I know what I am talking about.

    Mugs like you is why companies just send a cheque out in the first place, because over 90% of people just accept them. For crying out loud do you think they are going to call you and say "Mr So and So, we think an offer of £100 is reasonable, what do you think?". Lol, get real, they send you a low ball offer via a cheque so they can get away with paying a low sum out, most people don't bother with questioning the offer even though they should because THEY WILL get a bigger second offer.

    So you crawl back under you rock and plod along in your wee little life and accept what people do and give to you, some of us have a voice and have grown a pair over the years and gained a little knowledge on the way.

    really cant see this being right with an extended warrenty, i mean what the hell was the point of paying for that?, normal warrentys they can get away with it but you paid extra for this to be fixed if it went wrong, would really get a copy of the warrenty document and tell them you are publishing it on-line,
    these warrenties are a tidy earner and bad press will hurt them, dont take this lying down...i mean under law you would probably be entitled to part of your money back under the durability clause of the SOGA so to pay extra for absolutely no benefit would not be good.

    See how much completed auctions for your model on the bay have sold for. This might give you a reasonable amount to expect them to pay out.

    This is what I was thinking, what's the point of having a extended warranty if they're just going to give you a small refund if something does go wrong. Its not my fault that they don't stock the laptop any more, nor is it my fault that they no longer stock the parts for it. if they was going to discontinue the laptop why sell me a extended cover for it when buying the laptop?

    I once had a small problem with a camera that I got from PC world so I took it back hoping to get it repaired due to it being 11 months old,After showing them the problem they took the camera and gave me a full refund on the spot without even asking for one. Now thats what I call customer service

    Thanks I've just had a look and people are asking from £200 up to £420 for the same spec and £160 for one for spares or repair. I still awaiting their £100 offer....lol

    Just a update and its great news. Due to me no longer having a receipt they went of the RRP from when I got the laptop and offered me 55% due to wear and tear over 2 and half years, which funny enough worked out a bit more than I paid...lol
    Now got myself a macbook pro with 3 years apple care due to the good reviews of their customer service just got to get used to using this mac now ...lol
