I can second that. Fantastic for storage and very quiet too.

You also get a good warranty with them so they are built to last. Prefer them over the 'My Books'

Microdirect are doing a Seagate 400GB for just under £60 inc delivery.

basically which is better the seagate or maxtor?

    Seagate Freeagent for me.

It seems to work very well, is very quick when transferring date and once you take the USB cable out of the port it powers itself down.

I am very happy with this drive it's perfect for backing up.

    Very quiet, and very quick.

I backup a lot of files because I am a designer so should be fine for normal backups. I tend to rar the files and then put them onto the Freeagent (Seagate) then just unzip them onto the hard disc. I have found this is the easiest way when dealing with multiple files.

The warranty ranges from 1-2 years, all the way up to 5 years in some cases but their seems to be a lot of terms and conditions (and small print).

I got mine from Amazon. Just search for Seagate Freeagent and you should see some different sizes external hard drives. I think they are very reliable, much better than 'my books' in my opinion. They also power down when you remove the usb cable, the yellow light on the hard disc glows when on and goes off when it's off. A nice little feature.

That's the one I went for. You can get larger sizes though. Only around £52.00 + P&P

    anything cheaper?

Try Staples, I picked one up in store today - Iomega 320GB ext HDD for £49.99, the same price is shown for both the 250gb and 320gb, i picked up the bigger one and it went through the till at the correct price. Its actually on the back of the latest deals leaflet, but I cant find it online to show you a picture though sorry.
