External Hard Drive Crackling Noise?

Found 10th Mar 2012
Just been backing up about 250GB of stuff onto my external Hard Drive. Been copying for about 3 hours now and just noticed its starting to make a crackling noise, its very faint and can hardly hear it. Is that normal when backing up so much stuff or could it be faulty?

Is it not just the normal sound of the disk heads moving back and forth?

A faint rapid ticking noise is normal if that is what you mean. That's simply the result of the write head and the spinning platter movements doing it's thing internally.

Yeah, it's a goner.

Take it outside and hit it with a sledgehammer until it's in millions of tiny fragments. Then set those fragments on fire. It's the only way.

time to worry is when they start to click , disk failure will eventually happen .

250 gb taking over 3 hours? You using carrier pigeon or something
