External will not work as its Too big to be formatted as FAT32 and NTFS is not recognised by the PS3..

    So I believe

Yeh, I have used a 120gb drive on it no probs externally.

As long as the external USB drive you choose can be formatted to the "FAT32" file system architecture (something else the world has to thank Bill Gates for) then it will work with your PS3.

The faster the spin(dle) cycle speed (revolutions per minute) the better, but this will typically increase heat dissipated during use.

I see the drive you have listed has the following specification:

    ---
Data Transfer Rate: 480 Mbps Limited by the USB interface anyway.
Spindle Speed: 7200 rpm As mentioned above; this is relative fast compared with other drives of this size.
Buffer Size: 16 MB This is also a good figure; it means that data will flow between the drive & the PS3 (& vice versa) at a faster rate because the drive has an internal cache area of 16Mb.
    ---

    BFN,

    fp.

I have a Western Digital 1Tb hard drive attached to my PS3 (with 60% of it used).

I've had a couple of verbatim ones (play.com/PC/…tml) and they are FAT32, work with no probs. instantly recogised.

also has anyone ever seen or used one of these

PITA though as if your thinking of storing any HD content on the drive chances are it wont work because file sizes are limited to 4GB with FAT32

im not very technically minded , if i plugged one of them into the front of my ps3 would it not use up some of the power and seeing as ive got a hard drive hooked up to it maybe slow it down ?

I thought 120GB was the upper limit for FAT32 Drives or is that just Windoze that can only recognise around 120GB

Presumeably you could multi-partition the drive

Presumeably the bigger the drive the more space you lose due to the way FAT 32 Formats then?

the only thing i read when i was researching my hard drive thats in anyway negative is that the biggest file you can copy on to it is 4gb , but i dont even think ive ever actualy used a file that big

    EVER

look it up samsung story station , i got mine from play using the 5 pound off voucher for 84.99 , but i think amazon was selling it for that price anyway , it was actually a eview on amazon that convinced me to buy it

so far so good, 8 Nov 2009
By phl8pg (Yorkshire) - See all my reviews

A nice, quiet, attractive drive which runs without getting hot. Read somewhere it uses less power than most other drives too. The on-off switch dead useful. The light dimmer is a nice touch if a bit gimmicky

Comes pre-formatted to FAT 32 which is good if you plan to plug it into a PS3 (create folders called PICTURE, MUSIC, VIDEO, GAME for the PS3 to recognise [and allow 'display all' on the PS3 to view whole file trees]) but you may want to convert to NTFS if you only plan to use on a PC, should take several hours to reformat. NTFS is more secure and can hold files over 4gb which FAT32 can't.

Well packaged and good delivery from Amazon.

Only had a few days, has been on permanently and not broken, so far so good.
