    External Hard Drives?

I have been looking for a 500GB external hard drive to store my films, music etc. on. But as I know very little about hard drives, I thought I would ask here to see if anyone can help

I have narrowed it down to the following 5:

    ebuyer.com/pro…761ebuyer.com/pro…761

    ebuyer.com/pro…212ebuyer.com/pro…212

    maplin.co.uk/mod…m12maplin.co.uk/mod…m12

    ebuyer.com/pro…409ebuyer.com/pro…409

    ebuyer.com/pro…331ebuyer.com/pro…331

Can some one please tell me which is the best deal and will suit my needs best

Or if anyone knows of any better deals to be had, please let me know

    Thanks in advance

Well theres not much in it, all much the same spec wise.

So it comes down to which box you like the look of!

One advantage of the maplin one is if it breaks it will be easy to return. But as they change lines more often than ebuyer if it does then you will end up getting something better or a refund which will buy you more in the future.

If you sign up for maplins new letter you will get a code for £3 off this and its free delivery.

This works well, and is a player/recorder, but you need to add the drive (upto 500GB), better than just a box for data

Thanks, thats an interesting looking peice of equipment. Would work out too pricy for me though :-(, and I only really need the storage.

Does anyone know if Maplin will stock more stuff instore than is on their website?

No instore they will have only whats on their website. very occassionally thet will have a web only offer but never as far as I know a store only offer.

A useful feature they do have is at the bottom of every item page is a Store Stock Finder, just enter your postcode to see which local shop have it in stock (although they will all order it from the warehouse if not in stock).

Best way is to buy the enclosure then buy the HDD you want.

    Hi Simplygifted,

I have had a 320GB Western Digital External Harddrive for about a year now, and it has been fantastic. Whenever someone asks me about external HDDs, I recommend Western Digital, so I will do the same here and say I recommend the first 2 you have listed.

I'd say buy a Seagate, simply because they are a top brand and come with a 5yr warranty.....

I have a Western Digital one which is good, but given the choice now I think I'd prefer the seagate for the peice of mind of the extra 2yrs warranty

Thanks for the advice everyone

I ended up getting the maplin seagate one instore, because I needed it quickly. Was lucky I rechecked the stock today, because last night it was at one so I wasn't going to bother..then this morning 28 :w00t:

Anyway, thanks again and I hope you all have a great christmas :santa:

Im looking at a Freecom 5oogb media hd (£160), these look good as they can connect to the web and download software updates

If you get the maplin one in store they should give you a free catalogue, which offers more vouchers etc. Plus if you get a kind sales assistant they usually give you £3 off on top of the harddrive also lol
