hi guys,

i've recently networked my xbox and my laptop so i can access my items via the dashboard and view them on my TV.

question is, on the media blade, under the video section before selecting computer, theres the "portable storage" option ...

would i be able to rig up a harddrive to store downloaded HD content and play them on the TV via the 360?

cheers.

it depends on how the Hard drive is formatted.

I have a pendrive which works but

My 120gb External harddrive which i completely formated doesnt work

EDIT:

"Well one solution would be to plug the USB drive into Windows XP and create a new Fat32 partition. Once connected, you will then need to format the volume. Once that is complete, it is a matter of simply plugging it into your Xbox 360. – the new drive should appear on the Media section under “portable device.” In order for this to work, the drive must be formatted using Windows XP"

thank you, will look into it.

Quick heads up.

The XboX360 will only read a USB hard drive if the drive is formatted in FAT32 not in NTFS.
FAT32 limits individual file sizes to
The XboX360 will read HiDef video files from a USB hard drive - if the videos are of WMV file type and smaller than 4gb in size each, the 360 wont play mkv files.

The only problem is that most of the HD content you are likely to download will either be wmv or mkv filetype, and the chances are that the files will be >4gb in size each.

If you want to put them onto a FAT32 drive, you can but you will need to cut the wmv files into pieces
Your 500gb hard drive will be formatted in NTFS by default if windows XP has anything to do with it. You can format it in FAT32 using third party software, which you can download freely off the internet, but there is little point in doing this for HD movies unless you are prepared to starting cutting files down in size.

I’m guessing the HD movies you may be downloading will be typically 6 - 9gb in size and WMV’s.
The xbox will play them if you copy them to a dual layer DVD and play them via the xbox 360 internal drive (using the UDF filesystem in NERO to create the DVD’s).

Best Regards

Use a prog called TVersity, which makes your pc or laptop be a web server and will play all file formats through your Xbox360 on to TV. Only draw back is the PC has to do the hard work and decode it all before transportation, but I use it and have found it to be excellent.
