facebook elections starts 16th april

Facebook is to trial a democratic process by giving members a chance to vote on how the social-networking community is run.

On 16 April, Facebook will post the revised versions of its Facebook Principles and the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR).

Voting will commence on that day for one week and members will also be able to read the company's response to members' concerns over policy changes which were implemented earlier this year.

Facebook was heavily criticised for changing its Terms of Service, which included keeping all photos on the site, even after a member had deleted their account.

The company then issued a U-turn in the face of mounting pressure. The April election, open to its 175 million members, follows on from "town-hall" style meetings on the site.

More than 3,000 comments were posted during the review period.

"The 30-day comment period for submitting feedback on Facebook's proposed governance documents has ended, but the opportunities to help shape the policies that will govern Facebook have only begun," wrote Simon Axten, an associate on the Public Policy team, on the Facebook blog.

"We encourage you to participate in this vote on our new revised documents. If it is approved, all future changes to the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities will go through the same process of notice and comment," Axten added.

The voting will be audited by Ernst & Young.
