never mind a few months back when the facebook settings got reset, and everyones details were open for google to cache, and you had to change them back to private yourself

I'll paraphrase something I typed in another thread yesterday...

If you don't want anybody to gain any of your personal information don't put in on the World Wide Web.

Good point. I've always wondered about the safety of online storage.

    Its a bit like saying

'if you dont want to get run over dont cross any roads'

In this day and age its getting unviable to suggest such a thing. Facebook on the other hand, I dont use it and I dont have any sympathy for those who put their life story on there, this article is more about how facebook has stealthed away peoples rights to privacy.

If they do not charge for use of the service then revenue for running it has to be made through allowing others to view information to harvest away for their own purposes.

Not that I am saying that details are bought/sold between organisations but the change in privacy rules have made it easier to gain account details if members have kept the "default" settings (of low, or no, privacy) when the accounts were created.

(I've not had an account on Facebook long... never wanted one or had the need for one. I only signed-up to see what the fuss was about)

I actually agree, and dont put my life on a potentially public place (albeit a few settings to hide them)
I dont want my name and address or identifying information online, I think i am the only person I know who can google themselves and get NO results at all

luckily for me, my facebook was empty of any information, and was a just a tiny inconvenience
i just feel sorry for those who had set the privacy settings and assumed they would remain, but ended up being exposed anyway, even the facebook founder first said it was no big deal, and some slighly embarrasing photo's of himself he took down

Did it mean he was exposed more than he wanted others to see?

I have seen some user's pages that are just asking for their details to be used to clone their identities (exact date of birth, street address/town, maiden name, and so on). It is very worrying that these users have no idea what potential problems they are leaving themselves open to.

That's ok for some, but for others it's almost unavoidable having details across the net.
