gotta love this quote

Mark Champion from the Wildlife Trust in Lancaster told BBC Breakfast that although the spider will bite, it is not something to worry about

really mark

id say the image of the blokes leg is something to worry about

know it all idiot
Nope, not seen any these spiders and I don't wish to either !
Creepy. If I spotted that in my flat it would be squished in a matter of seconds.
No actual attack from a false widow in the UK has ever been confirmed by an arachnologist as being done by a false widow.

The bites do hurt, and they can cause an infection, which can be treated relatively easily with anti biotics. Only dangerous in large groups, which they don't really tend to group in as they are very solitary creatures. The ocasional infestation of a few hundred has been found in houses in the past, but it would probably take 20-30 bites to do any major damage to a human.

More likely to die from a black widow crawling off a veg display in a supermarket than be bitten and hospitalised by a false widow in the uk. Pretty easy to avoid aswell, if you see a web which isn't built in the 2nd dimension but in the 3rd, it could only be a couple of different types of spiders, of which the widow family is one, so just observe at a safe distance if you see one.

Gotta love this comment:-

Ricki Whitmore, 39, was injured when he disturbed a nest of flesh-eating false widows while working at a school and will be off his feet for six months.

lol
I'd probably **** myself a lot more if I saw a non poisenous scorpion over seeing any species of spider which can naturally survive over here.

So what we saying here guys, the result of his leg injury wasn't from the spider?
What's the official line? Can we exterminate?

Might need to call Delbert McClintock.

Seriously

the poison resulted in the injury to his leg but he wasn't gnawed by the jaws of flesh eating spiders

Should see how the press resports on hobo spiders (brown recluse) world wide. Would expect every single bite they give to necrosis of any soft tissue.

But I've held one, and seen those bit by them, and to be honest the vast majority of bites just lead to a really really horribly painfull swelling and nothing more. (I know that doesn't sound very pleasant, and it is to be avoided, but bullet ants are a lot worse)

Well, I wouldn't reccomend sprays, if round the outside of the house or a work surface that can resist hot liquids, that boiling water from a kettel can be a relatively quick way to kill a spider without coming into reach.

Sprays although quite fast, can affect a lot more than what you intend to kill.

I'd reccomend getting one of those spider reacher devices if you really hate them that much!

You should take up sewing, or model making, it helps strike a fine balance of pressure and precision :-)

Alfonse, can I message you actually, got something I want to ask in a bit?

Meh, they're cute and cuddly!

Sensationalist media reporting again. This is the UK. Even in Australia there hasn't been a fatality caused by a spider bite in 35 years!

Not to say that spider venom isn't necrotic, just that you should be worrying about crossing the road way more than an all out attack of the arachnids... (_;)
Wheres Goldmax when there's a thread he needs to see!!
HOLY SH*T!!!!! I should not have clicked on this thread, I hate spiders!!!! oO
Am I the only one that is now itching all over ?
