Collected some tickets from Leeds this morning from a nxec fast ticket machine . Got on the train and realized the thing had failed to print my return ticket!!! Just my outgoing ticket and my receipt showing it should have printed 3 tickets

Went to the office and the guy was as much use as a chocolate fireguard 'oh our machines ALWAYS work' well umm I brushed my hand in the collection slot several times and it was empty when I left it...

Now I have to buy a single return ticket in carlsisle which will cost as much as the whole return I bought initially!

What can I do!

Go to the train operators website and complain.

buy the same ticket again and see if it does the same thing

get on the phone to their customer services and kick off, say u have the slip saying it should have printed out 3 tickets but u only have the 2, u have the receipt saying u have paid and it was the machines error, u shouldnt be out of pocket for it

I use the machines at Leeds a lot, and they are slow, so your return ticket may have been printed after you walked away. I've found loads of reciepts and tickets in the slots when I've been to pick up mine. Doesn't help you now, but will hopefully prevent the problem in the future. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Since you did not notice it had happened at the time, I imagine that they will be less than helpful, thinking you have probably lost or sold the return portion. If it had actually been a machine fault, surely you would have noticed at the time that you were only given 2 of the 3 tickets you expected? First thing I do, be it using an ATM or Fast ticket machine (etc.) is to ensure I have what I should have.

I'm going to board the return train with my receipt and explain - If I have to buy another ticket it will go to head office with a nice letter.

I've used the ticket machines loads of times and never had a problem until today!

Since the missing portion is the return part, is on a young persons railcard and also a Zones 1-5 Metrocard it would be useless to anybody in Leeds!

what happened?

The very nice conductor let me return with just the receipt ticket. I was ready to pay for a new ticket though as it wasn't technically Northern Rails fault!

Or I think that is what happened...I had a big bag of alcohol on the trip :whistling:

I've done this myself in the past when the Edinburgh Waverly machine hasn't worked. The ticket man wasn't happy about it, but then, there wasn't a lot that could be done. I'd paid for my ticket, had proof of it, and wasn't going to pay for it twice, he couldn't realistically fine me or kick me off the train because their company's machine wasn't working. Or he could, but then he'd probably only end up with getting his **** kicked by his boss if he'd got it wrong. He did reason that he had no way of checking that the receipt was legit, which was fair enough. But then, he had no way of proving otherwise, so he begrudgedly just let me stay.

So, go for it, I say.

Edit: Ah, nevermind.

result, alls good then, well done
