Faulty HP Compaq 6715b Notebook PC - Repair help

My Hp 6715b (less than 16 months old) doesn't work. It doesn't start up and screen is blank.

Contacted HP and they quoted £445 to repair it. This is very expensive. Anyone else had this problem and how much did it cost to fix?

Do any of the lights come on to indicate power? or is it completely dead?

The power lights come but nothing else works.

that's a riduculous estimate, you could get a brand new one for cheaper!

what happened before it stopped working, ay prior indication, any bangs or knocks, power surges or power cuts?

Before this happened the screen used to go blank a few times. No prior indication - jsut happpened suddenly.

Have you tried connecting it to external monitor?

If the machine is in good condition take it back to the point of purchase and ask them to find out what is wrong with the machine and then either repair or replace it free of charge. It is unreasonable for such a costly product to fail after such a short time span.

HP had huge problems with dodgy motherboards on their machines back in 2007 (early Vista models), they even voluntarily extended the warranties of many of their computers. If you keep pushing HP support they may even collect it free of charge and have a look what is actually wrong with it.

I have tried external monitor and that doesn't work. HP refuse to do anything until i pay £445 as they say that's a standard fee no matter what the fault is

Tried taking out some/all the ram modules? Does it start beeping?

Where did you buy the computer from?

You can also try calling this number 02079490300 (main switch board) tell the person that answers that you have a faulty HP laptop that is just out of just warranty and that you are not happy about being charged for the repair and now want to speak to someone from customer relations about getting a free repair or replacement computer.

Be polite but firm in your demands. Don't feel shy about asking for a replacement computer, while they will not give you one it might make the HP representative more willing to consider giving you a free repair (better of two evils).

    Hope this helps.

do you know if it is still booting and loading Windows/your O.S?

e.g. does it make the Windows startup noise etc or can you check if it is getting an IP address (assuming it is set to automatically log-in to a user account and connected to a network)

    Sounds like another faulty motherboard.

hmm. does sound pretty fubar. you need to find a friend who has some expertise in deconstructing (and preferably rebuilding) laptops ;-)

Im only 15 so talk what i say lightly but i swear there is something in the trades description act or whatever it is stating a product has to last a resonable amount of time for its purpose
E.g. a laptop should last many years and not just 16 months

i think the manufacturer only has to provice warranty for a year unless the item is spceifically sold with a longer warranty, i agree though, its totally rubbish

    and these people have a brand new one for £3 more than the quoted repair price;
