Faux Rebooting Samsung Galaxy Note 9. This is a weird one.

Hello,

I'm encountering a problem that has me stumped, I'll try to keep this brief:

I bought an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in December brand new from a UK retailer. From the beginning it had issues such as always failing the first boot attempt when set to encrypt, freezing for a duration in excess of ten seconds, etc. I tried factory resetting and setting it up fresh as a new phone, only installing select apps, but still encountered the freezing and a phenomenon almost like a reboot. The phone display would go dark and the device unresponsive for several seconds, then when it responded to the power button waking it up it would be as if it had just rebooted; Wi-Fi disconnected, Notifications cleared, no actively running apps though they may still show in recents, the icons on the home page progressively loading, the flashing pen icon as the pen presumably connects and the double vibrate. It happened in several different apps and even with no apps running.

I sent the phone back and got a brand new replacement. This phone was clearly much earlier in the manufacturing run as after setting it up I had to check for software updates and update it about 4-5 times. Then I factory reset the device. I reinstalled a popular static theme using Samsung's suggested themes app and installed only 9 apps that weren't default, all widely used mainstream applications with downloads in excess of a million, most significantly higher than that. I still encountered freezing in excess of ten seconds and the faux rebooting. I ordered a replacement sim, swapped them over after leaving the phone off with sim tray ejected for five minutes. I then soft-rebooted the phone using volume down and the power button. Still encountered the issues. I went into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition. After about a day's use without issue I received a notification just before going to sleep, phone was on the side, all apps were closed, I opened the phone and tried to wake it to find it unresponsive, I tried again making sure I pressed the button, waited a few seconds and tried again and it woke up, notifications cleared, Wi-Fi disconnected, home screen icons progressively loaded, Pen icon flashed and double vibrate.

To have the same problem occur on two devices of differing manufacturing runs seems far too coincidental to be hardware related, surely? Surely a theme can't be the cause, it's just a skin and one of the top free themes?

The apps:

- Discord
- Reddit
- Twitter
- Evernote
- Playstation App
- PS Messages
- Crunchyroll (Never been launched)
- WhatsApp
- KHUx
- Samsung Email (Optional so not technically default)

Theme: [Walk On Mars] Blue Comet.

If anyone has any ideas as to what's going on I'd be very grateful for any insight you can offer. Thank you for reading!

Another vote for flashing the stock firmware.
