FHM - 3 issues for a quid - asking for sort code?!

So I've just been called by FHM, as I was a subscriber a few years ago (birthday present), asking if I want to have a new sub - 15 quid for a whole year, or 3 issues for a quid, no obligation, nothing to cancel, just that 3 issues for a quid.

Ready to hangup but thought ah it's only a quid and he DID say I don't have to cancel, so I goes through it all with him, then at the payment stage he asks for sort code?!

I've never been asked for sort code over the phone before, and alarm bells started to ring, how did I know it was legit? So I asked him to email me the offer so I could sub online- he tells me he can't as it's only going for a week and over the phone.

Apparently this bloke has been trying to call me during the week about 4 times, and now is gonna call back on Monday as I 'couldn't find my card'

So, 3 issues for a quid with no obligation sounds decent, but, was I right to be so paranoid?

    Your thoughts?

sort code is related to your bank account
They wont be able to process payment of the £1 without it.

Yes, you would have to put it in if you did the sub online anyway. I take advantage of these offers all the time and have never had any problems:thumbsup:

I know sort code is related to my bank account - but I've NEVER had to enter it online or over the phone when purchasing something - card number, start and end dates and the 3 digits on the back.

Only ever used sort code for direct debits and banking related stuff rather than purchases...

Made me suspicious that they were gonna set up a covert direct debit or something worse!

They do set up a direct debit as in..... first payment of £1.00 to be taken for first 3 issues
thereafter, payments of £13.00 to be taken every 6 months
Thats off my mens health confirmation letter that came this morning. All you have to do is the minute the £1 has gone out of your bank cancel the direct debit, its easy. Hope this helps:)

It's so that if you forget to cancel your subscription, a direct debit can automatically be set up after the trial.

This is the main reason they have these offers, so that people forget to cancel after the cheap ones and end up subscribing automatically

Covert? You are giving them the sort code so they CAN set up a direct debit for the amount you are authorising. How could they do that if you refused to give that info?

Yer, but I was told it was a no obligations deal which didn't require cancelling, which is why i thought it odd he asked for the sort code - i mean, you don't enter a sort code when you buy from say hmv.com do you - just buying a product.
