I got fibre optic broadband put in last week, when i signed up for it they said i would get 36 meg but since ive had it the highest speed ive had is 14 meg. the past 2 days it has been hovering around 8 meg but today its back at 13 meg. Is there anything i can do as its a hell of alot lower than was told i would get?

Thanks

complain to them surely as not as advertised shrug on whether they have shaping in place.

Next time read the small print.
It's UP TO 36 Meg.
I believe in your case it's BT but ALL providers doing same procedure:
UP TO ... Meg.

Small print will say not guaranteed 36meg, but upto. Give them a ring anyway.

Have you tried to connect to the HUB by network cable rather than wireless ?

My BT Infinity is significantly faster when I connect via cable rather than wireless

They said it was up to 40 meg but my line would support 36meg but can go 4 meg either side of that depending on time of day used. They said this over the phone to me when i signed up but im getting way way less than that.

No not tried that, my router is in a different room to where we use the computers so wired would be a pain. Might try it though see if it does make a difference.

After massive issues with BT Total Broadband, I'm on Virgin Fibre optic 10 Meg and never had to complain. Usually is more than 10 Megs (but maybe I'm just lucky)

BT always offers you the best speed possible on your line. The speed prediction we have given here is an estimate, however download speeds can vary and the actual download speed will fall within a range. The range is an indication of the speed that other similar lines across the UK have achieved for their broadband service; this is generally within 1-2 Mb higher or lower than your single estimated speed quoted.

Are you connected less than 14 days? You could try and cancel but may have a fight on your hands as they have omitted any 14 day cooling off period in their new terms and conditions.

I thought there are no cooling off periods once the line has been activated ?

That sounds disappointing. I get 16.5mb on my standard phone line and only pay for an 8mb connection

Almost certainly because your using a wireless protocol? The only way to do a reliable test is to try on a wired connection direct to the router, you might be using an older wireless protocol or have thick walls limiting the bandwidth between the router and the PC.

NB This is backed up by the high upload speeds, an ADSL service typically gives you 10:1 download:upload so getting 4Mb+ upload is very good.

Does bt not guarantee at least 15 meg Sure I read in the white paper

I connect wirelessly to my Virgin media router, and I can get around 40 mb/s, out of my Up to 50 mb/s connection.

Im pretty pleased with it

i agree much faster on the wire. We have bt and get 40mbs download and 10mbs upload. Very good service for me.

Are you connected wirelessly? If so connect direct to the router and run a speedtester.bt.com/ What does that give you?

This is my speedtest, from my location, Manchester to somewhere in somewhere (not Uk)..lol

And this is via Network cable

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1352787674.png

im on fibre too, i get 16mb at the most over wireless, over 40mb via ethernet. your wireless will have a lot to do with this, try a cable first

Yep

"BT have stated that there will be a guaranteed speed/sync of 15MB. ..." thinkbroadband
via google although what exactly this guarantee means I am not sure , most likely an exit path with mac code.

i pay for 'upto' 10mb to virgin media and i get 9.45mpbs.
ive done this test a few times and its never been lower than 8
