There are so many advertising logos on shirts nowadays, so I can't understand why a poppy would be a problem. I bet there would be no problem if FIFA were getting income from the poppy.

Just looked. They cannot wear it on the shirts but that is it.

I wonder what they considered the UNICEF logo on Barcelona shirts?

But it is FIFA we are talking about. The bastion of honesty and integrity. I expect if they got revenue from it, they'd all be clambering for it like bees on a honey pot.

Maybe the EU told them to "punish us"? lol

Latest reported by BBC radio 5 The FA have directly appealed to FIFA to wear the poppy and FIFA are deciding on the sanctions if they do.

FIFA would...morons!

Look

They can drop a million poppies on the pitch & run around lording it up holding massive poppies,

They are just not allowed to wear them on their kit!

Do as they done prior, wear a poppy on a black arm band. Fifa are morons. They'd think twice if we paid them per poppy.

Lording it up? I get the impression you don't like the poppy symbol.

There's no advertising on international kits besides the kit manufacturers logo.

This is one of those perfect stories for newspapers though. A foreign corporation mired in controversy telling us what we can and can't do??!! The outrage is easily provoked and that means sales/clicks.

And it's the same result. FIFA maintain their stance on political symbols on equipment and a compromise is reached. But in the meantime we need the 'drama'.

Because we can "lord it up" & do whatever we want with the symbol & what it stands for but put it on the kit.

We could make halos & daisy chains around our feet. The rule is on the kit & I get it. Anything else goes

Ok I see that now. I'm not really a football person, so don't take much notice of the politics of kits. I'm into Rugby myself. Maybe the players can have a poppy painted onto their cheeks (facial ones) I have never seen the poppy as a political emblem tough.

The IRB allows rugby nations to have sponsors during all competitions except the World Cup. FIFA tends to exert far more control over what football nations can display.

I think for them the poppy is a 'thin end of the wedge' issue. Personally I think it should be allowed but I can understand their argument that it's a political statement.

I've not taken the time to look into this, but I seem to remember this "poppy" ban being discussed in previous years. If it has been, then each side should have come to terms with the issue.

The FA have always banned symbols & statements from the kit.

Otherwise when Israel play Syria or North Korea play South Korea then there would be issues.

Its a blanket ban & players get suspended when they lift their shirts up showing stuff they shouldnt.

But the rule only relates to kit.

I don't think its the poppy issue itself that FIFA are against but the precedent it would set. We don't see it as a political symbol but other nations might disagree and then you open the flood gates for all manner of symbols.

and in international sport, its meant to bring people together through sport, you really don't want countries wearing symbols other nations, especially ones they are playing against, might find offensive.

I think we had this debate last year too and the players wore it on the arm bands I think.

I wonder if the FIFA members attending the match will be wearing poppies on their expensive(expansive) suits?

Utter morons.

This is fleet street and its right wing agenda.

Exclusive Fan Fury..... how does that even work?

Yes it is mate. Spot on. It useless press. Same every year. Nothing stopping the whole of Wembley Stadium being flooded with poppies. Just not on the kit.

Brexit Fifa .... We in no danger of winning anything anyway .

Fifa suppose to have a ban on political and religious signs /slogans/advertisement or clothing.

The poppy isn't a political symbol or religious. It is simply a sign to remember the fallen.

Iran put pressure on Fifa to allow the wearing of Islamic clothing during football matches, which was granted. I say the FA should put the same pressure on them, may not work in the same way but you have to try. The poppy is not a political symbol.

30 posts to get to the requisite 'ah but Muslims' comment. Now the race is on between one of about 11 posters to like it first. Anyone care to place a bet?

Anyways.... I know some will disagree but to me the Poppy is a very political symbol and that's fine. If you disagree then that's ok, but wait until this weekend when James McClean doesn't wear one (as he doesn't every year) and see his reasons and the reaction to them.

And you know it will because two things let you know Christmas is around the corner - red Starbucks cups and people on twitter writing badly spelled abusive tweets about James McClean telling him he should leaf the county or that he's happy to take English monie so should wear a popy.

Trust someone to make a big deal out of my comment. As if you're not allowed to mention that Iran piled pressure on Fifa, must keep quiet huh?.

Muslims also died in the world wars, its a symbol to remember all that had fallen.

Apples and oranges.

With the billions sloshing around in football just wear them & take the hit if fined.

How bad can the fine be? Fifa/uefa dish out paltry fines when racism occurs inside grounds so no drama

That's only because Sepp Blatter & FIFA believe that 90 minutes of racial abuse can be solved with a handshake when the players leave the pitch rather than what it truly deserves.
