finders keepers - should they have kept ticket

would you hand in lottery ticket you found??

the couple cashed in a winning lottery ticket which they found

they have already been given suspended sentence

A Swindon woman whose winning lottery ticket was found and cashed in by someone else should hear later if she will be able to collect the prize.

Dorothy McDonagh, 61, dropped the ticket on the floor of her local Co-op.

It was found by Amanda Stacey, 34, and her husband Michael who cashed it in and spent half the £30,000 win.

Wasn't there a story a while back of an owner of a corner shop on the continent that when asked to check a Euromillions ticket claimed it was a loser but later cashed the ticket for millions.

As far as keeping the ticket it would depend on the prize as a tenner would hardly be worth handing in but a few grand and up would get you in trouble.

I always pick up tickets and scratchcards.
So far I've had about 6 scratch card "winners".
I kept the money on the grounds that :-
    A. If they're so thick that they can't see they've won they don't deserve it and
    B. I'm fining them for littering.
I've found 2 lottery tickets but they didn't win.
Both times I'd have felt "guilty" if they turned out to be winners but what can you do?
Ask the person who dropped a winning lottery ticket to form a queue at your home?

Cross referencing CCTV images with the time the ticket was purchased?

I would have kept it purely because I wasn't aware that you could prove that it was your ticket, so if you hand it in then no-one would win - definitely wouldn't now though

This is why you are supposed to sign the ticket as soon as you get it.

I say if you find a dropped ticket that has no name on it then you can keep it. No different to finding cash on the street and keeping it.

If you find one in future wait 179 days (telling them you spent it looking for the rightful owner) and give it in to Camelot, this gives them a day to find out whose it it before they may pay you then.

A spokesman for Camelot said: "We have a clear lost-and-found policy.

"If a member of the public finds the ticket they should send it to our prize payout department, setting out in writing the circumstances of the find and the steps they took [if any] to reunite the ticket with its rightful owner.

"If no corresponding prize claim or lost ticket notice has been received, the prize may be paid to the finder at Camelot's discretion after the expiry of the 180-day claim deadline."

The emails they send you to confirm your ticket purchase don't have your numbers listed.

She had a receipt - probably a matching time printed on it.

I'd have kept it but would've been outraged if it were my Grannies! Catch 22 I guess....

You seen how often the Euro is won by someone in Portugal or Spain? ;-)

I don't play Euromillions often but I did play last when it was a really big one a short while back, think I won about £8 or,I recall the winner being from Spain, don't really follow the results otherwise.

Thank you for the offer Mum

    And as to buying more?
I've thought of that but they would have to buy DOUBLE what everyone else does.
    Sorry, still does not compute.

Myself included I always find it strange that loads more have a go when it's £100 million but less when it's £30 million, as if £30 million isn't quite enough.

Shows you how what you think is happening sometimes isn't.

France is Europe’s luckiest country as far as Euromillions jackpot winners are concerned. The nation has had more top prize winners than any other participating country. Ce’st la vie!

could of sworn on the news they said they only have to pay back the half they havnt spent

then it showed the old biddy saying she wasnt happy and she was taking camelot to court for the rest?

You could be right, I read it as they froze the unspent £15k. I assumed the money returned was the £15K they has spent but I suppose it could have been the £15K that was left.

I had a long conversation with my 88 year old grandpa about this, this evening!
He gave me numerous accounts of 'honest' stories from over the years. But, I'm sorry, I was completly honest with him & told him straight! I have 4 kids, a £10000 loan for my car, a £1500 visa bill & would love to take my kids back to Florida next year - damn right I would have cashed the ticket. It was the old bags fault that she dropped it in the first place!

That was my understanding - the half that wasn't spent is to go back to the person who had the ticket, that person is then wanting to sue Camelot for the other half. On the news the lady wasn't going into any detail about the claim although the way the news was presented implied there was no legal basis for the claim.

i think shes claiming negligence on the behalf of camelot for letting them cash the ticket in the first place....im not quite sure how she was registered so they knoew it belonged to her but if theyve found out after obviously there is something wrong with the claiming process...id etc etc

its not quite as simple as "the old bag lost her ticket" so she deserves to lose the money she won ......after shes probably been using the same numbers and account ??for years.,....

lesson is if you find a winning lottery ticket that doesnt belog to you....cash it and spend the money as soon as possible....or skip the country like the nz couple who were gifted 10 million by the bank by accident....

yeah but these days the person dropping that penny would have been caught on cctv and as it belongs to someone else that golden ticket is forfeited:)
