make sure its kept clean, need to clean it every 3/4 days ...... have a pump for clean air ...... not in direct sunlight..... check the fish' needs e.g. water temp & food diet

Cheapest and lowest hassle option... :whistling:

We have 2 tanks, both have tropical fish in them, both require regular water changes and cleaning, i wouldnt get fish unless your prepared to do both.

I dont see the above as high maintenace but others do, i guess it depends on the type of filters you use and tank set ups.

You havent said if you want coldwater / tropical or marine fish

get a 50" plasma, and buy a fish tank dvd, fish are people too.

:? that's the one my little boy wants :?
what's wrong with it

The only low-maintenance system is Reef One's Biorb. Every 4-5 weeks you need to change the filter (5 minute job) and siphon off 30% of the water and replace it with clean water (15 minute job).

oh right, so the biorbs are not good enough then, pretty much no maintenance, small and easy.............ffs

He must of predicted the future damn rabbit.

Nice looking tank though Guv:thumbsup:

You have to be careful with those kids sponge bob square pants and dora the explorer ones. They aren't suitable for tropical fish as they don't have a heater and you can only really keep 1 goldfish or 2 very small goldfish in them due to the size of the tank.
Goldfish need more space than most other fish of that size and they can grow a lot bigger than when you buy them.
Bi orbs are gorgeous but are really not very fish friendly, fish don't like having to swim round in circles and due to the shape of the tank there isn't much space so you could only keep a very small amount of very small fish in them.

There's also not really any way out of having to do regular maintenance on a fish tank, they do need a fair bit of looking after.
I had a tank for christmas, knew nothing about fish keeping before then, and have been amazed at how how much there was to learn

 well my hubby has said if he eats his dinner up all week then he can get a tank & some fish with his birthday money although now we're having drama as my other son has decided he wants a fish too but we're not going to have 2 tanks but the little one doesn't want to share his if he gets one
i think that kids with asd find fish relaxing so your wifes choice is better than yours

Fish keeping - Getting started with tropical tanks/fish

Firstly, assess what space you have, and what budget.
in addition to the aquarium:- A heater, a filter, Lighting, gravel, and plants.
If you always believe your role is to keep the water, not the fish, you will succeed. If your water quality stays within certain parameters, you will undoubtedly have healthy fish. But if you ignore the nitrogen cycle, your fish health will be forever poor.

The size of the tank dictates the number of fish that may safely be kept in it. A general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per net gallon of water.

Your aquarium will be glass or acrylic. Remember acrylic can scratch very easily.

Tropical fishes need to have their aquarium water maintained at a temperature similar to their natural environment. For most species, 75 - 80° F (24-27° C) is suitable. Virtually all heaters are controlled by a bi-metallic strip thermostat

If your aquarium is situated in a cold room, you might need more heating than normally recommended for your aquarium size.

The following is a basic guide to which heaters to choose for various aquarium sizes.
25 Watt Mini Aquariums
50 Watt Aquariums to 18“ (45 cm)
100 Watt Aquariums to 24” (60 cm)
150 Watt Aquariums to 30” (76 cm)
200 Watt Aquariums to 36” (90 cm)
300 Watt Aquariums to 48” (120 cm)

The biggest mistake a beginner can make with an aquarium relates to feeding. Your fish will always appear to be hungry, no matter how much you feed them. Only ever feed them just enough food that they completely eat everything within 1 to 2 minutes. Only feed fish once or twice a day. Fish can easily go without being fed for 2 to 3 days. Over feeding will result in excess food polluting the water, and fish producing more waste.

Some fish have very different feeding habits to others in a community tank, ensure you offer something for all.

You should also feed a sinking algae wafer or two if you have bottom feeders such as plec, corydora and loaches.

there are loads of handy web sites about, here's one to start you off:

I almost forgot - always wash your new gavel VERY WELL before adding to your tank

if you have a look on fleabay at tanks in your area you may be able to get a bigger and better make tank very reasonably priced.
Mine was bought from a fish shop, I was surprised at how much cheaper you could get them for on the dreaded bay

i agree many experts say its cruel to keep goldfish in small tanks and they should be kept in at least 30litre tanks people actually think 2 years is the normal lifespan for a goldfish but its not they can live to 50 just because fish cant speak or whimper does not mean there happy
