    Flashing....

Alright, I tried looking this up but I'm still a bit confused.
I'm thinking of flashing a samsung f480 but what would the benefits be?
I know the bad points are that the phone could become damaged and useless. Also the warranty would no longer be vaild.

But what are the good points of flashing a phone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Precisely why i titled it flashing. People in misc are always predictably dirty minded
Some of you lot really need to get out more

advantages = no branding and unlocked

Removes the network branding and the phone runs faster (works best with Orange as you lose that stupid bar down the left which slows the phone down by up to 35%).
If the flash goes wrong you've a nice new shiny brick !
I've flashed a load of phones and never bricked one yet, just make sure you read the faq twice and flash once and it'll be like having a new phone...

What's so bad about the network branding, is it just that it slows down the phone?

I hate orange firmware its allways slow and buggy and not uptodate
generic fw will be way better and more bugs will be fixed

Lots of providers (vodafone in my experience) lock out features on the phones and have their own custom firmware which isn't updated as often as the manufacturers own (if at all) so you don't get the benefit of bug fixes or performance tweaks. Its a bit more than just branded icons and pre-set internet home pages. I've flashed a couple of my phones, most recently after I found the manufacturer had released 4 firmware revisions fixing crash-bugs since I got my current phone and vodafone had issued none at all!

generally the original UI is flashed by orange - usually disables some original features

sounds good . Final question... where would i get the latest firmware for the phone and I'm guessing I would put this on the phone after I've flashed it?

A guy from Nokia told me once, "We spend something like 5 man years developing the firmware, then the networks (Orange) come along and take 3 weeks to add their branding software and then when the phone screws up it's our fault !!!". He wasn't happy. . .
