    FLY RAGE!

As the title says.. I have FLY RAGE! In our bathroom, we have some sort of infestation of little black files.

I've Googled like nobody's business but can't identify which kind of fly is bugging us (hehe). Common types seem to be sewer flies, fruit flies, etc but it's none of those (from the pictures I've been looking at on the internet).
These flies are small, black and winged. They look like your typical house fly only smaller. I can't get a picture cos my crappy camera won't focus on them so the picture looks like a black blob.

A lot seem to gather on the windowsill so I've taped around the edges of the window to see if they're coming in through a little gap in the window, but since I did that more have gathered...
Strangely, there's not often any live one flying around, they seem to die straight away - when I find them they're always dead.

I got some Raid bug spray and went mad with it, spraying it everywhere but they just won't stop coming!! I've put bleach down the plugs on the bath and sink too in case they're coming up the drains but no luck with that either....

If I leave it a few days without clearing them up, there's literally hundreds lying on the windowsill and on the floor below. SUCH A PAIN IN THE..................!!!!!!!!!

We had a fly problem at work a while back. Hundreds dead in the lights (and I mean hundreds!, near black lights), never flying about, always just dead.

Turned out to be an annual fly that came back every year and only came out at night time. It couldn't be stopped for some reason. The had a expert in and everything. In the end they moved buildings it was that bad.

do you have a broken toilet waste pipe, maybe coming up from there

if they are a bit crunchy when you squash them they may be woodworm , best google a pic and compare them. : )

Its enough to make you turn to the (blue) bottle by the sounds of it :whistling:

they'll be behind the toilet where it fastens onto the wall - i had some in an old house.

keep spraying the stuff or get a longer lasting spray/insecticide and keep on top of it so eggs die as well. otherwise they'll keep coming back

Have you any plants because little back flies sometimes breed in the soil

we have had tiny little ones in our bathroom before, stupid mould problem i think caused them . only thing that really worked for us was fly paper

Is your house clean? I left a bag of rubbish in the kitchen before going on holiday and there were hundreds of tiny flies when I came back. Had to disenfect everywhere to get rid of them.

Really hope it isn't a persistent problem.. It's driving me mad! Moving out is an option as the tenancy agreement runs out next year and the house is far from perfect but I'd much prefer they just ******ed off!

It's a possibility. We had the landlord come round to fix a block pipe and he seems a bit of an amateur so could have messed something up down there..

Just googled them and it's not them. Don't fancy doing the 'crunch' test :-D *shudder*

This could be it - there is a gap about 5-10cm wide where the pipe goes into the wall. Will buy some more Raid and spray the lot down there!!
Having said that, they mostly seem to be round the windowsill - not sure if it's becuase they're coming out of the wall and flying up there or coming through the window and dying straight away...

No plants but the bathroom is in the basement. If you open the window up, you're below street level and there's a load of soil and crap which has accumulated in the 'pit' beneath the street. I was thinking that the flies are living in this soil outside the window and come through some sort of gap..
I need some sort of liquid insecticide that I can pour down there (as i can't get down there myself to spray) but i'm not sure if such a thing exists.

The house is quite old and pretty damp so there might be some mould growth somewhere.. Will be getting some fly paper too - would much rather that than them kamikazee-ing into the water when i'm trying to have a bath!!! :x

Yeah it's pretty clean. My housemates leave the adjacent kitchen in a mess but the bathroom isn't too bad

Anyone know if a landlord / estate agent would have some sort of obligation to sort this out (i.e. hire a pro)?

You could contact enviromental health if you really can't get rid. You would need to sort the kitchen and stuff out cus they might say they're coming from there. Pour some bleach and crap out the window into the soil...It's probably the mould in the house to be honest. Are they only in the bathroom?

Yeah might get onto them as a last resort.. I'll try pouring some chemicals and stuff into the soil.. see if that helps.
Yup, just the bathroom. The odd one flies around the rest of the house but i'm guessing thats just one which has escaped from the bathroom.

I would advise gutting the hole house out, they end up coming back if you don't! I just got air freshener and the bug spray and went mad, then disenfected! Good luck!

I have them in my greenhouse you can get a spray, or dry the soil out thoroughly before you use it ,that is supposed to kill them off. Not easy to do this weather .

try` jeyes fluid` ouside , you havent got an aair brick that they are coming in have you ? : )

I suffered with fly rage myself recently. I don't think they were the same type of flies, these were really small. Teeny weeny , and very irritating. They were slow and stupid though, so I could squash them on the windows when they landed. I could squash up to fifty at a time if I went round all the windows. They seemed to settle only on the windows out of the sun... Oddly, I stopped buying bananas, and they flies went away. They were definitely attracted to the bananas, as there was usually one left going black in the bowl. Now we are fly free!
