Football debate, which would you rather have?

You have a choice of two teams to pick from

Team A plays the beautiful game but have not won anything in the last 5 years and WILL NOT win anything in the next 5 years no matter how hard they try and whatever they do. Each week they play attractive attacking action packed exciting football but more often than not lose 3-2, 4-3 etc. They finish 8-10th every year.

Team B play anti football push for the title most seasons but do not win it, they reach the Europa League if not the ECL every year but get knocked around the quarter final stage each year. They also win a domestic cup every 2-3 years. Each week the play boring defensive football that is on the whole unattractive to watch but each week they win 1-0.

Whatever happens the above conditions cannot change.

Which team would you rather your current team resemble?

This is not a dig at any premiership team, just interested to see which you would prefer to be a fan of.

Yes it is... you're having a pop at Liverpool.

But to answer your question...... playing the game properly is what counts. Only glory hunters would think a trophy is more important.

And I'd think most fans wouldn't regard being a big club is all that important either.

i'd like to choose team c who win all matches by at least two goals each time they play. they also win premier league and champions league every season. and they also give their fans £100 to watch every game.

Sounds like there both Liverpool Home and Away.

I choose Barcelona!

Team A. I would rather be entertained. Can't stand watching a game where it's just defend and punt the ball away for 90 mins. Would rather lose by five goals and be involved in a game that has a future classic, than hold on in the attempt that we might get a draw. Winning is an amazing feeling, but if i'm going to be bored then there is little point in wasting my time watching. Life is too short.

firstly football is all about winning just look at the way Man Utd played agaist arsenal monday it was a solid defensive performance but the week before smashed blackburn 7-1.

if Team B is liverpool i do find them boring to watch but they have been involved is some of the greatest games i have seen:

games with newcastle mid 90's
champions league v milan
fa cup final west ham.

why can't a team be built on there defensive qualities?

rather have a maths debate if im honest

team A sounds like Man City and its been like that for the past 30odd years .. but give me that everyday of the week thanks ..

I don't like bandwagons or prawn sandwiches

lol...as I said in the OP it is not aimed at any club (others see it that way).

it was general question regardless of who you support and was a totallt ficticoius league..

im the same all the great teams have had a good solid defence even barca. football is the beautiful game because of the whole package- emotion, skill, entertainment and most of all winning. teams like arsenal are great to watch but the longer the trophyless seasons go the argument to praise them slides because of there being zero trophies. im quite sure everyone would like to watch good passing sides who "play the right way" but ultimately winning is the end game. teams like West Brom a few seasons ago tried to play good stuff but got spanked nearly every week and went down, now if blackburn, wigan etc tried to play like that they would end up the same. winning 1-0 is a damn sight better than losing 5-0.

Can you clarify the first statement i've highlighted. How winning contributes the most to football being referred to as the beautiful game. When justify the statement think of other sports and how winning is of major importance in them to.

What about the second highlighted part? Are you suggesting that the entertainment and beauty of their play is measured against the trophies which they hold? That over time despite continuing to play beautiful pass and move football, people will no longer find it good to watch because no trophies are one. To me this implies that Rangers are a better team than Arsenal because they have recently one a league.

if I was watching a neutral game i would rather watch a 4-3 loss to whoever. if i was watching my team play i would rather they win 1-0 even if it were boring, at the end of the match i'd be happier with my team winning 1-0 in a boring match than if they lost 4-3 in an exciting one.

and as muffinman says "there is nothing exciting about losing"

Football is all about entertainment. (Well it is in my eyes.) It it was all ups, without any downs, it would simply be the most boring game on the planet and they'd be nothing worthwhile to talk about either.

Ok so take for example the couple of Liverpool v Newcastle 4-3's from a few years ago even as a newcastle fan you must have thoroughly enjoyed that game at Anfield. I always remember newcastle fans saying it was their best era for watching their team yet they won little if nothing. I wonder if their fans would swap this current viewing for then even if it meant they would win nothing.

Just because a game may be 1-0 doesnt make it less entertaining than a 4-3, unless all you consider is the ball hitting the net.

In that respect I'd go for Team A, entertaining football, but that doesnt mean 4-3 games, it means entertaining as a whole - good passing, good defence and the ability to score team goals as well as having players capable of individual brilliance.

you never played football?

After watching Big Sam at Blackburn now for 2ish seasons, I have to say, when football is played ugly, it is not only ugly, but completely boring to watch. Fair play we might get relegated now without him, but at least I won't have to watch the most boring, miserable and under-whelming football ever played at Ewood any more.

I guess some fans won't feel the same, but lets be realistic, if we aren't winning or being entertained then we are just struggling and surviving.. Where is the fun or enjoyment in that? Oh yay, we missed relegation by 15 points, thanks Sam. Also thanks for all the times I have switched the TV off half way through a game through boredom and frustration.

Not professionally no, though I'm guessing the bonuses for winning mean you probably really don't care.

Meanwhile back to fans preferences.......

So for me, it would be Team A without a doubt. As a fan I would gladly sit in rain, wind or snow to watch the beautiful game. I would not if the game was a complete yawnfest, win, lose or draw. The real issue is, when you watch your defensive squad you have no idea if you are going to win or not, you have no expectations because you know.. You can't have any.

Whereas if your team is playing stylish and entertaining football, you don't have any expectations either, but you know what you are going to see is a good game and when they play so beautifully you cannot help but let other expectations creep in, such as winning by a massive margin etc.

I haven't had any expectations of Blackburn for a long time and for me I find it quite painful to admit. I am not bothered if we are considered a mid-table squad, or a small team, what I am bothered about is that people think we suck because our football is an absolute bore to watch.

Do keep on topic..... there's a good chap.

And of course managers care if they win or lose.... some care about entertaining too. But the question being asked wasn't to do with managers or players - it was what fans would prefer to be watching. Please correct me if this is wrong Greg.

^^ correct guv, this is mainly from a fans point of view. Tbh I'm suprised by the fact that anyone would want to watch 1-0 boring matches as long as they won. But that was why I started the thread to find out. I go to a football match to be entertained not to see my team purely win at all costs. Probably the reason I stopped going, we have been reasonably successful in the past 5-10 years but the football has been that dull most of the time that I found myself sitting there bored stiff.
Personally I'd rather watch team A, i do wonder though after a while whether you would get frustrated with it?

why the Arrogance Guv?

why does a game have to have 5 or 6 goals to entertaining? and what team could you name week in week out play or are involved in boring matches?

Tbf I think you are missing the point, the OP said high scoring games that were action packed skillfull games not purely goal packed rubbish football. This or watching boring, negative 1-0 wins. We are not on about actual teams just which type of fottball you would rather see week in , week out.

team A.

surely it depends who the 1-0 is against if it means your team wins champo league final on a tense 1-0 i'd take that!

I'm not on about one off games, read the op, it's about the whole season and season after season. Any numpty would take a boring 1-0 win in a ECL final. oO You're right guv it must be too hard to comprehend.

greg, it all depends on what sort of suppoerter you are. If you go to the games week in, week out then you'd prefer performances surely...... you pay your money, you want to be entertained. Armchair supporters would probably be happy with consistent 1-0 wins though, regardless of how the team plays.

I'd take performance over results.
