It was the early 90's. And Celtic were told to put numbers on their shirts, so they did.
They put the numbers on the sleeves, not the back.
Obviously, the "fair" Scottish Football Association, and SPL then spat their dummies and told Celtic the numbers MUST be on the backs of the jerseys.

And yes, it was Bobby Murdoch who graced the No.4 jersey.

I think it was more a compulsery thing from UEFA. Also over the last few years that teams with stripes or hoops playing in Europe now have to stop them on the back of their strips to allow for the numbers to be more visible

nah,celtic fans spat their dummies because they thought they should be treated differently to their scottish counterparts.?:thinking:
