Ford Escort Auto Revving when put into Park

ive got a Ford Escort 1998 Auto 1.6 and after driving it for about a hour and putting it into Park or even Neutral its starts revving up and carries on going really high. i switch of the engine when this happens but want to see if this is a simple fix as it is annoying everytime it happens.

anyone know what the problem is called as i tried googling it but cant find anything.

    any help appreciated.

i had this with a vw golf just try cleaning your accelarator housing

Is it an auto choke - if so this could be part of the problem, if it is engaging when you are at low revs as though it thinks the engine is too cold

is the accelerator housing the pedal area? or the place where you rev the car from the engine bay?

when i put it into P or N it starts revving and it wont stop i even tried pushing the pedal down abit as well.

it could also be the Mass Air Flow Sensor, or Idle control valve - if you google these you will find out more

If its happening when hot it makes me think faulty temperature sensor. But your best bet before you strip the engine throttle body like i did is get the engine management checked by a friendly mechanic. Fords do have ECUs right? I'm going on experience from my 96 VW golf btw

might have a go at cleaning the idle control valve and if the problem is still there might have it looked at by a mechanic.
cars only done 49k but reading online a few people have had this happen to them as well.
