theres the link for avg free edition, been using this just under 2 years, really good anti virus

Have you tried AVG? I am told it is pretty good - that is what I have got on comp at home. They have add ons too! Auto updates every time you go online and doesnt seem to slow system too much.

Techno buffs on here may say different tho so please dont shoot me if I am wrong

Sorry textreme - you beat me but QED hopefully!

I think AVG is a very good product as it functions just like an AV product should - it sits quietly in the taskbar, catching any virus which gets into the system. Its detection capabilities are good and it rarely seems to go wrong (unlike Norton/Macafee which can be a total pain in the neck when they malfunction).

My main compaint is that it's not always that great at cleaning infections if you install it onto a drive which has been running without AV although this is definitely something that has improved since the 7.5 update. I would also like a quieter update mode, at the moment it flashes up a progress box and tells you which files it's updating. A little animated icon in the system tray would do fine as it normally manages to update itself fine.

If this wasn't a family forum I'd tell you the geek name for McAfee. Plenty of free options better than McAfee.

Ultimately the update feature was what stopped me using AVG. No matter what time of day or night I set it too I always seemed to be on the machine when it wanted to update, and it was a resource hog whilst it did it. I'm currently in the Beta test for Comodo, which is still a long way from being finished, but is looking good so far.

The best thing to do Harvie is download one of the free software and try it out for a few weeks. If you like it cool, otherwise uninstall it and try another. Thats the advantage of free utilities, your not tied into one because you have spent money on it.

I have for a long time recommended AVG to people as a free AV solution however latest version seem to cause quite a bit of system slow down and as John says it doesnt always have the best results in cleansing a PC of it's infections.

However Avast is an excellent free alternative to AVG and provides as good protection if not better.

Personally I prefer a paid for solution called NOD32 from www.eset.com which is both excellent in stopping and removing malware, but also has a negligable CPU and memory overhead.

cheers guys will download AVG and give it a try

Agree with Aggy, I have an extreme dislike for McAfee, sadly my company uses it...my main complaint is that it has a tendency to go wrong and no amount of uninstalling/reinstalling will fix it.

Not too bothered by the updates as they only take about ten seconds but I have to question the need for them as it seems to do multiple updates in a single day.
