Whatever you use will be better than nothing. Avast works fine for me along with some common sense.

Out of the three AV mentioned, only AVG and Avast provides free version
    Kaspersky requires a paid subscription.
    I personally would recommend Avast.
If you get annoy with the "voice" you can always switch it off in settings.

I have been using avg free for a couple of years now and touch wood had no problems

Microsoft security essentials, works well in the background, and they surely know windows better than anyone ? I've used Norton (paid), Avast, AVG (paid and free), but after all these years I'm backing Microsoft.

If you bank at Barclays Kaspersky is free.

Id pay and get kaspersky.i have never had any problems with it and find it to be one of the best. (if you find three people who need it in your friends and family you can get it for around £15 £25 for a 3 pc copy making it quite cheap if you split it)

easy to install, does the job.

Use AVIRA Anti virus (free version) with COMODO firewall - install AVIRA first.

Comodo will challenge when programs access the internet. Obviously have to allow your anti virus update, browser and email client acess (Microsoft is always allowed). If in doubt just deny on a one off basis. Malwarebytes free also works well in conjunction with AVIRA and Comodo. Just do a full sweep every month or so will take a while.

AVG + Ad Aware + Spy Bot search and destroy

People complain AVG has become bloated, and I'd have to agree with that. Avast is probably the better of the two.

I like Microsoft Security Essentials and have recommended it to a few people. I get Kaspersky for free and like it so will be sticking with it until it expires (you can buy the 2009 version off ebay for a fiver -- but you can upgrade it to 2011 for free)

    My preference

    Avast and Malewarebytes

    avast.com/fre…oad

    malwarebytes.org/mba…php

Everyone is different and you will probably find that this descends into a slanging match with people dissing other peoples choices , try a few and see what you prefer

+1 this unless you be a pirate

    Miscrosoft security essentials

    MSE

Mse here too, and a pirate

Avira, malwarebytes and Zonealarm for me. Had Kaspersky on yes is was good but took forever scanning and constantly locked up. My advice would be have a read about them on t'internet and try what suits you. Don't forget they are free so you can always take it off.
