Anyone know? My Macbook seems to be performing a little on the slow side, I have downloaded a few things onto it in the past week and think I may need to run a scan & have some proper software on it.

If theres no free ones available, I don't mind paying - as long as its nothing too steep :-).

have you checked the harddrive space left? If it's more than 90% full this is likely the cause

What's a virus?

A restart may help
also...
Go to disc utility in utilities and verify disc permissions & repair disc

Free up disc space. Especially if you are using movie editing software

I've used macs for over 10yrs and never felt the need for antivirus software.

Visit Apple Discussions on their web site - all you will ever need to know is there. And free

Doubt you will have a virus

Oh and empty your trash - in imovie / iphoto etc as this holds onto to a lot of space.

Yes agreed it wont be a virus or anything unpleasant. That's just for windozzzzzz
