Free PC protection

Hi all,

The mother in law has started using the tinternet but does not have any firewall etc. As she uses it just to surf I think she will be OK with a basic package, something like the Zone Alarm Free Firewall.

Will this be OK? Or is there anything that you guys could suggest that is free (and legal!).

Thanks

when i had avg, viruses still got in, the best is ad-aware and avast

ZoneAlarm free is fine for surfing.

I've got Free Zonealarm & AVG & they are fine. AVG & Avast have about equal recommendation & is probably more down to personal preference. Just make sure you set her cookie settings so they don't automatically allow cookies (the default on 2 new laptops we got). Think about using Firefox as her browser - has additonal add-ons & more cookie settings.

Download CCleaner & run it before she switches off every night. It will clear out her temp directories etc. It also has a simple tool to find & delete missing registry files, & you can also edit windows start-up there. Very user friendly.

For spyware etc I've got Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot & Superantispyware. Alot were recommended on here - bit over the top possibly ;-) but I've had no virus / spyware attacks in last 1-2+ years.

All free, if you need any links I can add them.

Avg is good but avast seems more user friendly and after 3yrs using avg i tried avast it found 2 viruses that avg missed.

Really? don't bother! Software firewalls cause more hassle than they are worth for novice users, just make sure she is using a router with built in firewall and use xp/vistas own internal one.

Do make sure she has anti-spyware anti virus software though, avg, avira, avast are all good.
A realatively new comer to the anti spyware scene is www.malwarbytes.com but very good product, the free version doesn't offer resident protection but hey avg etc do that pretty good.

While it is OK to suggest people use the built in Vista firewall I dont think anyone should suggest using the built in XP firewall.

It does not check ANY outgoing traffic (the Vista one does)

cheers guys, I'll give ZA a go and see how she gets on. After 3 lessons she nearly knows how to turn it on so I dont want to confuse her!

Rep for all

so?,, if your machine is not infected by a trojan or keylogger there is no need to check outgoing packets as you are the one that sent em.

If she's new to computing Zonealarm may confuse her, when it pops up with messages, and its not really that geat these days.

But for free protection both AVG & Avast Rate about the same, MS anti virus & XP/Vista anti Virus 2008/9 malware can get through them quite easily, plus a new variant of it.

Totally agree with maddogb malwarebytes is good at cleaning this type of malware, as is superantispyware.
But it ain't new

Antivir from free-av.com/en/…tml is pretty good at new virus detection, light on the system but also has drawbacks, good detection of new viruses, but not old ones. But like all of them its not 100% but is a free version.

Hope it helps
