Free upgrade to 20mb broadband for existing Orange customers from £9.79/month

Ok so I'm not sure that this is a deal as such but I rang to complain of slow speeds to Orange cust support on 07973100150.

I was receiving 2mb on an 8mb package 'home select', and my line can support 5mb. I was thinking of getting a MAC but was transferred to tech support. They advised me that they are aware of the problem and is due to them testing 20mb lines since March.

I was advised to wait and on the 21st October they are rolling out 20mb and offering it as a free upgrade to existing customers so you still pay the same rate. However it will be a new contract.

If you have a phone contract with them then you will get 20mb with unlimited usage for £9.79/month or £19.57/month for broadband only.

Seems a good deal to me but I await the cold votes for no conformation and the Orange broadband haters.

Probably best to call them yourself to confirm the deal.

Not sure what price new customers will get the 20mb for. I was told that due to the adsl2+ upgrade I will now be able to receive 10mb but we shall wait and see.

I've moved this to Misc as it might not be for everyone but is still a good tip

how do you check what your line can support?

Avoid Orange like the plague! Do a little research (google) before getting stuck with them. Loads of people had no end of trouble with them.

There is a checker on the orange website or any other broadband providers website. Or you can go to www.speedtest.net but that will only show you the current speed and not potential speed.

May be best to call Orange.

True but there are negative reviews for all ISPs a lot of it unfairly eg people complaining ofbslow speeds when they live 8km from an exchange but seem to think it's an ISPs fault.

Also it's only unhappy people who tend to review and comment. Happy customers usually stay silent.

Think it depends on the area in terms of Contention ratios, I have 5 freinds in the same Village with (wanadoo) Obviously migrated to orange and must say they have never had a problem customer services seem ok speed is consistant.

Now Tiscali phew where to start

True, TBH its not how near or far you are from the Exchange its the quality of the line to your building and which way the network is routed out.

Two house on opposite sides of the streets can have quite a dramatic speed difference.

Yeah line length and quality are the two basic factors but there are hundreds of others too...even the weather can affect the speed!

what speed are you likely to get? any better than what you received before?

site is telling me i will receive exactly the same speed but there isnt a chance that is correct.

at the moment i get 8mb when downloading even though the bt speed checker says my line is capable of up to 6mb, I was told that i could expect apx 16mb once the upgrade goes through

That website says my line (BT) is capable of 4mb, yet I only get 0.88 tops when downloading :x

Do you mean downloading files?

This is to do with the measurements I believe...someone will explain this better but broadband packages are measured in megabits but your downloads are done in megabytes. There are 8 megabytes to a megabit so when you download it will usually be about 1/8 of your actual broadband speed.

Sorry if you are confused, I may not have explained it well.

If you go to speedtest.net it will tell you what speed you are actually receiving...this speed will be about 4-5mb
maybe slightly higher.

Yes downloading files using my rapidshare account. My speed is no where near 4-5 mb, just under 1 meg, which is a comedown from last year at my uni digs where we were getting just under 12 mb download speeds

Speedtest gave me:
0.73 down
0.70 upload

I am on Orange's Brodaband Retention Plus deal which works out at £4.99 a month (£9.99 a month with 6 months free) they have offered me the 20MB deal but my line currently only supports 5MB and after an exchange upgrrade in June 2010 the max speed will increase to 6MB.
