Please remember, you can still connect your existing phones to the phone socket on the back of the BT Smart Hub 2, once you have been moved over to DV.

...Time to find free VOIP providers and handsets.

Most users likely won't bother use dedicated VOIP handsets, they will probably prefer the convenience of using the VOIP service on multiple app-based smart devices that have a speaker and a mic, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.

If you must have a freebie VOIP number now, Sipgate will provide one including your choice of geo area at zero cost and no ongoing fees. Service includes freebie voicemail to email etc. The only cost is if you wish to port your existing landline number to the VOIP service (one-off £30) or if you choose to make outgoing calls.

You have to be a Digital Voice line customer, not on the standard copper telephone line.

She'd know about it if she had it because her old-fashioned phone socket would no longer work. Most people haven't been migrated yet. The target to switch everyone over is 2025.

You only need the adaptor for extensions, if you only have 1 phone just plug that into the hub instead of the master socket.

So it is a VOIP switchover and voice packets routed thru the internet.

Wonder what happens to other Openreach providers, since they use the same lines as BT !

Time to find free VOIP providers and handsets.

BTW how much is the adaptor for RJ-11 to Ethernet port ? WIll this be compatible aand suitable with other providers who use BT/Openreach lines?

I think it only works on the newer phones lines with fibre to cabinet or maybe just the newest which is fibre to premises. (edited)

You would be surprised. Openreach are upgrading fibre to premises (fastest newest) broadband working firstly from the sticks in towards towns in most areas.

Before xmas my friend could only get 15mbps (8 miles to nearest town & 3 miles to nearest village) & last month got 1000mpbs with 970mbps guaranteed for the month on trial but chose to stay om the 76mbps because he doesn't need it any faster or more expensive. (edited)

Can the phone be used with a provider other then BT? It says can only be used with the BT hub - could connection to another wifi router work if you have a digital phone contract, e.g Sky?
  18. Avatar
In terms of the "HD' aspect, would this work on a traditional phone with BT's digital voice adapter? Or do you need one of their new digital VOIP phones to fully utilise this feature?
    Avatar
My understanding is you need one of the new digital voice phones to take advantage of the HD voice feature.
