If it's legal, what's wrong with it?

I can remember the first time I did something legal. The shame it brought to my family ensured I'd never find a husband of wealth and stature.

If it's "legal doping" surely it's not banned? Doesn't make much sense to report on them taking perfectly legal substances though...!

the substances are all banned, just they have an excuse for using them and get permission beforehand
so they will get a competitive advantage of some sort probably and do we really know how necessary each exact application of the drug was?

This is just Russia trying to flex it's might in a tit for tat war.

They were caught swapping samples, some whistleblower was even killed to prevent the truth coming out and this doping scam was supported by the Russian government - whereas, according to official reports, our athletes had "Therapeutic Use Exemptions" noted on file - our government is not supporting the doping of our athletes and swapping samples

    Unless someone can prove otherwise

Ah right, makes sense when you put it like that.

    Banned

what exactly did they take? I am lost

Even though it's legal, it's still giving some competitors an unfair advantage. Froome/Wiggins may have had hayfever, but they've also had an unfair advantage from taking whatever they took. I can't blame the Russians for trying to even up the balance.

Haha! I said the same stuff yesterday on a post about American athletes!

In the case of hay fever I'm not sure it would give them an advantage as hay fever treatments only mitigate the symptoms, they don't eliminate them. Even though competitors may get a boost from the medications, they would also still be feeling the effects of the condition.

Of course if it's proven competitors have lied about an illness in order to take the meds they should be banned like any other cheat but there's no evidence this has happened here.

Got to line 5 of the story and didn't need to read anymore "There is no suggestion the athletes are involved in any wrongdoing."

I find it quite incredible how many top level athletes apparently have asthma or hayfever or both, thus allowing them to take ephedrine.........amongst other substances used to treat such ailments.

Exercise induced asthma is not uncommon in endurance sports. I remember hearing that about 1/3 of professional cyclists have/had it.
I developed it about 20 years ago when I used to used to run more than cycle. Not a nice thing to have.

if it was illegal they shouldnt take it, if it was legal and they were honest with the authorities then you cannot blame the athletes for being honest and playing by the rules, can you?

asthma and hayfever- yes they are very rare ailments?

Hayfever according to NHS - Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life.
Asthma according to Asthma.Org - There are 5.4 million people with asthma in the UK, which means asthma affects one in every 11 people and one in five households.
