Eurogamer has uncovered evidence that staff at GAME were told to buy Nintendo 3DS consoles and games from supermarket rival Tesco on launch night to sell them in-store as pre-owned.

An internal document, below, reveals that staff were encouraged to make use of Tesco's eye-catching launch bundle offer for the 3DS on Thursday night.

Tesco sold the console for just £175 when bought with any 3DS game for £34.90.

Disgusting .. I hope they go bust

So they must be planning to sell the "pre-owned" stock for more than they bought it from Tesco? Just goes to show Game think consumers aren't clever enough to shop around, which will eventually be their downfall. Pre-owned from Game or brand new from Tesco? I know which one I'd go for.

Welcome to last year, and the year before that.

Yep, they do this with every major console release. Bunch of **** basically!

This is absolutely disgusting, am so shocked that i dont even know where to begin slagging this **** take by GAME.

what a con oO

yeah there is no way that that piece of paper with some writing on could've been faked

What's the problem?

I don't see a problem with it, this sort of thing happens in a lot of businesses. I thought the letter was going to out line a gain for the staff but it doesn't.

Again, I don't see the problem?

If they were trying to pass them off as new then fair enough. If people were stupid enough to buy a 'pre-owned' one for more than you could get a new one then more fool them

I think its disgusting.

And whilst people should just shop around, many won't. but more importantly, it deprives genuine customers from getting their hands on one, when the tesco runs out of stock. then they're stuck buying it from some rubbishy retailer, like GAME.

I did this a few times when I briefly worked at CEX. It was DS Lites back then and they were selling them on at well above RRP. Now that's a shady practice though if people purchase at above RRP then they'll continue to rip people off.

Intelligent people won't see the problem in this.

A company bought stock cheap and re-sold it.

Business sense.

Do the staff not benefit at all from this?

I do agree that its what any company does to keep afloat, its all part of business. Buy cheap, sell at a higher price. Its only way to make money. If they sell too high then more fool the buyer who is paying those prices instead of shopping around.

Tesco are not bothered who buy their items either as long as they get the money in the end.

I think its a bit cheeky of Game to ask the staff to buy it, but them not to benefit at all from this, Not even £10 extra cash back. Maybe i have read it wrong though.

I actually think it's a decent move by Game to do this. Let's face it, they're in a market that isn't going to grow much more, facing increased competition from massive companies like Tesco and new modes of distribution. They have to be smart like this.

why?

I dunno what to make of it. Game are a dodgy retailer anyway but this does make sense to do just like buying a pre-owned game for £5 and trading it in 10 minutes later at ASDA for £20.

The fact they are wanting to wait till new stock is sold out and then sell them at roughly the same price is a little dodgy but as long as they are selling as pre-owned it's up to the customer to decide if they want to pay. My only concern is are Game selling these as pre-owned or just wangling them in as new which would be a little dodgy.

They are also gonna mark up the game too and this does take cheap stock away from honest customers of Tescos who will end up having to buy the same 3DS from Game that they could have got from Tescos if Game hadn't bought them all.

Let's say they did. What could the implications be?

Think he meant rubbish.

Whats the problem,everyone's a winner

^ On March 9, 2011 GAME shut down 19 of its branches in the UK and Ireland. Staff Representatives of these stores said that the redundancy package was 'Laughable' and that 'Games handling of the affair was completely unprofessional.

Nice business model...screw the customers and %$£* the staff.

I'm surprised they are selling them a pre owned. If they are still sealed from Tesco then why not sell them as brand new?

This is just good business sense, if anyone here owned a shop and needed stock, what would they do? Go to the wholesaler and pay more, or go to a supermarket and pay less?

Good thinking from Game, I'm shocked Game are still alive considering the likes of ShopTo and Amazon, so fair play for using a bit of initiative

Is it a tax thing?

Just excessively high pricings for pre-owned stuff. Have seen pre-owned in there more expensive than the new price on their own shelf.

They are quite an expensive retailer too. Spose "dodgy" is maybe a bit harsh though I don't like them much.

In reference to selling them off as new well I spose they are new but not sure Nintendo would be happy with them being purchased through those channels for retail sale again. Not sure it's actually illegal though.

Games distribution companies have strange rules and allocations etc so dunno if this actually breaches any. Tax could come into it if they sell them as new stock. If they sell as pre-owned then it is probably totally above board.

except for their rep and for their staff

The news broke when an apparently disgruntled staff member who claims … The news broke when an apparently disgruntled staff member who claims that they were officially reprimanded for declining to take part in what the memo strictly describes as a "not-mandatory mission" leaked the documents to Eurogamer.

Wise move.........specialist retailers can't compete with Tesco (on retail price or distributer costs) so use them to buy in cheaper than they can get them for from the distributer.

Could possible be, i don't think they have to charge VAT on pre owned?

Im surprised they were not selling them as New, thats why i would never buy from them online, as most new games they send are pre owned i bet.
