gamestation website verses instore prices

Having downloaded the just cause 2 demo, I thought buy it. I looked on the gamestation website and found the pc version to be £25. a not insignificant amount of money but I decided to go into town to buy it.

When I got to the shop it was £35. I enquired to the lad behind the counter and he said yeah, that's the internet price..they are cheaper.

I've read before about high street stores and their websites being run as separate concerns but surely this behaviour is taking the **** somewhat? I've had a quick look at their website and I cant see anywhere which says the prices are different instore to the website. They do display a rrp but no instore price.

In this case the customer wins cos they can whistle for my custom. I am about to order it via amazon instead.

Does this kind of thing happen in other parts of the world? I'm sure they wouldn't stand for it in the US. :-(

Stores have more running costs than the net.

If the website was setting prices differently to the high street I expect them to point out the difference on the website or instead call their website a different name. That would cut out any confusion and prevent in my case a wasted 15 mile round trip.

Every retailer can decided whether or not to integrate their online activities into their bricks and mortar activities. Tesco generally does it, however most game stores don't.

I assume (aside from the overheads etc) you're paying for the convenience of buying in store (that and they want to get top dollar from the people who don't know how to shop around ;))

That's life, just suck it up and order online Physical stores have their occasional bargains, but don't expect them to match online prices unless they say they will do.

The website has the store numbers - phone and ask.

Honestly thought it was common knowledge though.

PC world the same, as are currys too I believe.

Don't pc world do a collect in store service? its the same as argos, you look on the website and then buy the product in the shop for the price advertised.

At the end of the day its the shop loses out because I take my business elsewhere. It's just irritating because if this happened to 10 people id bet 5 would buy it at the higher price.

Still, its done now, I've ordered it from amazon (should have been zavvi grrrr!) had my moan and been left a little disheartened by the general apathy towards rip off Britain displayed in this thread (no offence intended).

Most of these companies would have no change in the amount of business they receive, purely because most people are well aware of the fact that it's standard practice for the prices to be higher in-store. They don't try to hide the fact either, you'll notice that many, many companies- especially providers of services- will offer you a discount for signing up online. Sure, some places do charge the same price in-store or on the website, but PC World often has higher prices in-store on some products and Argos will charge you the same price for the item, but then add delivery on top if you buy online and want it delivered. There's no apathy in this thread, just a lack of awareness on your part!!! (also no offence intended, but given the other replies I think this is much more likely).

Although suggested it is "common knowledge" I think you have described the realisation that everybody who buys video games experiences at least once before they become an active member of sites such as HotUKDeals.com.

Prices of in-store items (not necessarily restricted to video games) are typically more expensive but bespoke in-store offers sometimes occur to attract the public to return to the high street.

I am sure many people have looked around their local Comet, Currys(.digital), PC World, and similar retail stores & leave confused by the pros & cons of each prodict so come home with a list of options to research online. They then have found web store prices are somewhat cheaper than those displayed in-store.

High street stores cater for those who are not as active online as the Government would like you to be, or those that have an immediate need for any particular item, or are not available to take home deliveries during standard office hours/delivery times.

Your fifteen mile 'round trip & wasted time was a hard lesson to learn & thinking you have "punished" GameStation in any way is a little naive, but if you think you have been vindicated then I am happy for you.

When GameStation.co.uk has a deal for an item that really interests you then you may back down on your principles & use their services. Or you may not. I will never buy from GamePlay.co.uk &/or ShopTo.net again due to my own personal differences with the organisations, but keep seeing the same items at a few pounds cheaper than I am "forced" to pay elsewhere because of my principles is mounting up....

PS. As an aside, the GAME.net domain & associated online retail site did not used to be owned by the Game Stores Group. Cybersquatting is a crime that has also affected The Coca-Cola Company.

PPS. ...and yes, I do know that GamePlay, GameStation, & GAME sales all line the pockets of the same board of Directors.
